In writing the book, our intention was to deliver a comprehensive practitioner's guide for SME principals and their teams to provide them with the essential Skills, Strategies, and Tactics they need to learn, then adopt, followed by the clinical Actions they will need to take to be highly successful in their business. Our ultimate aim for the SME Leadership cohort is to transform and become our SME version of the Corporate World's Highly Competent Generalist. In pursuit of that quest, we have graded and logically compressed the seven strengths that emerged from my two decades of research into The 5 Critical Success Factors of SME Leadership. They are: 1. The Foundations, 2. The Finances, 3. The Front-Line, 4. Managing Time, and 5. Sustainable Collaborative Leadership. Critical Success Factors 1, 3, 4 and 5 are predominantly universal capabilities, regardless of where your business trades globally. Critical Success Factor 2, The Finances, is unique in that Tax and Statutory Compliance Obligations differ from country to country. A core premise of our advice that accompanies Critical Success Factor 2, The Finances, is the importance of retaining a competent, locally skilled contract bookkeeper (part or full-time), or allocating those responsibilities to a staff or family member who has those skills, and also to retain an external Tax Accountant/Advisor to deal with your unique annual higher order Taxation and Statutory Obligations, wherever your business trades. The accumulated learnings to be gained from universally adopting and following The 5 Critical Success Factors is not only for the benefit of the principal or CEO, but also for senior members of any business team, small or large, who are committed to learning and contributing to the success of the venture they work for.
The story of one of the vilest murders in Canadian history. One glorious autumn day in 1894, a drifter attacked thirteen-year-old Jessie Keith so violently that people thought Jack the Ripper must be loose in rural Ontario. To solve the crime, the government called in Detective John Wilson Murray, the true-life model for Detective William Murdoch of the popular TV series Murdoch Mysteries. His prime clue was a black valise. The Man with the Black Valise traces the killer’s trajectory through three counties, a route that today connects travellers to poignant reminders of nineteenth-century life. Chief among them stands the statue of the Roman Goddess of Flora, gesturing as though to cast roses onto Jessie’s grave.

Banks are of central importance for economic growth, the allocation of capital, competitiveness, and financial stability. Propelled by technological advances in financial analysis and financial deregulation, the banking industry's investment played a key role in enhancing national economic growth in the early 21st century. The global financial crisis in 2007 revealed the banking world's feet of clay. Since 2007, the turmoil in the global financial system has prompted a fundamental reappraisal of the scale, scope, governance, performance, safety and soundness of banks and other financial institutions. In this Very Short Introduction John Goddard and John Wilson explore the world of banking, describing the role of central banks in national and global economies, and analysing the increasing supervision and regulation imposed on the banking industry. Looking to the future, the authors consider proposals for reform of the banking industry, and the prospects of a resolution of the closely-related banking and sovereign debt crises. ABOUT THE SERIES: The Very Short Introductions series from Oxford University Press contains hundreds of titles in almost every subject area. These pocket-sized books are the perfect way to get ahead in a new subject quickly. Our expert authors combine facts, analysis, perspective, new ideas, and enthusiasm to make interesting and challenging topics highly readable.
Exploring Hamilton through its heritage museums. Inside Hamilton’s Museums helps to satisfy a growing curiosity about Canada’s steel capital as it evolves into a post-industrial city and cultural destination. With an emphasis on storytelling and unsung heroes, the book identifies where Sergeant Alexander Fraser bayonetted seven enemy soldiers in a shocking attack to save Upper Canada in 1813. It evokes the day in 1939 when King George VI and Queen Elizabeth opened the Queen Elizabeth Way, the first intercity divided highway in North America. And it illuminates the four months in 1846 when an otherwise immensely privileged teenager, Sophia MacNab, documented her mother’s excruciating demise. Appealing to Hamiltonians and visitors alike, the book brings to life the former residents of Dundurn Castle, Whitehern Historic House, the Old Waterworks, Battlefield House, Griffin House, the Joseph Brant Museum, and the Erland Lee Museum, birthplace of the Women’s Institutes.
Heritage Toronto Book Award — Shortlisted, Non-Fiction BookIlluminates Toronto’s early history through its small heritage museums. A portrait of William Lyon Mackenzie stares from a mural at Queen subway station, his face as round and orange as a wheel of cheese. He served as Toronto’s first mayor, led the Upper Canada Rebellion of 1837, and was grandfather to William Lyon Mackenzie King, Canada’s tenth prime minister, whose own orange-pink visage graces the Canadian fifty-dollar bill. Three blocks from the station, Mackenzie died in the upstairs bedroom of a house now open as a heritage museum, part of a network of such homes and sites from early Toronto. Inside the Museums tells their stories. It explains why Eliza Gibson risked her life to save a clock, reveals the appalling instructions that Robert Baldwin left in his will, and examines how the career of postmaster James Scott Howard shattered on the most baseless of innuendos at one of the most highly charged moments in the city’s history.
Universities are being seen as key urban institutions by researchers and policy makers around the world. They are global players with significant local direct and indirect impacts – on employment, the built environment, business innovation and the wider society. The University and the City explores these impacts and in the process seeks to expose the extent to which universities are just in the city, or part of the city and actively contributing to its development. The precise expression of the emerging relationship between universities and cities is highly contingent on national and local circumstances. The book is therefore grounded in original research into the experience of the UK and selected English provincial cities, with a focus on the role of universities in addressing the challenges of environmental sustainability, health and cultural development. These case studies are set in the context of reviews of the international evidence on the links between universities and the urban economy, their role in ‘place making’ and in the local community. The book reveals the need to build a stronger bridge between policy and practice in the fields of urban development and higher education underpinned by sound theory if the full potential of universities as urban institutions is to be realised. Those working in the field of development therefore need to acquire a better understanding of universities and those in higher education of urban development. The insights from both sides contained in The University and the City provide a platform on which to build well founded university and city partnerships across the world.

The second edition of this popular book presents a detailed economic analysis of professional football at club level, with new material included to reflect the development of the economics of professional football over the past ten years. Using a combination of economic reasoning and statistical and econometric analysis, the authors build upon the successes and strengths of the first edition to guide readers through the economic complexities and peculiarities of English club football. It uses a wide range of international comparisons to help emphasize both the broader relevance as well as the unique characteristics of the English experience. Topics covered include some of the most hotly debated issues currently surrounding professional football, including player salaries, the effects of management on team performance, betting on football, racial discrimination and the performance of football referees. This edition also features new chapters on the economics of international football, including the World Cup.

The publication of the great eighteenth-century collection of William Hunter in Glasgow University marks an important stage in the British SNG project. With accompanying descriptions and over 6000 citations of earlier studies, this catalogue of the first half of the Hunterian's Roman Provincial coins illustrates the 2428 coins produced in the West, and East as far as Commagene. Coins provide a major source for the study of the ancient world, but the 'Greek Imperials' have perhaps still to be fully appreciated in the context of the Roman Empire. From the death of Caesar to the reign of Diocletian, almost a thousand cities in the provinces issued coins with types and inscriptions that symbolize their cultural identity. The coins published in this substantial volume offer a wealth of information about many aspects of local life in that period, including religion, architecture and administration.
JOHN GODDARD'S TROUT-FISHING TECHNIQUES is the distillation of more than a half century of fly-fishing wisdom by a master. Goddard focuses on fly fishing for trout, and includes chapters on tackle; the trout's senses; casting to, hooking, and playing trout; where to find trout in both rivers and lakes; trout foods; and fishing with wet flies, dry flies, and nymphs. A special section thoroughly covers the methods necessary for catching trout in stillwaters. In addition, Goddard offers full tying recipes for many of his original patterns, including the world-famous Goddard Caddis.
