As we age our outlook on life changes. Throughout our carefree youth and busy adult years, working, producing, and rearing future generations, our focus is on just that, the here and now. We don't think that our parents are watching and enjoying for the second time what we are seeing as a whole new life experience. Now that my youth and working years are done and the whole new life experience of retirement is unfolding before me I have time to reflect. A few years ago I enjoyed writing the memoirs of my early working life in "Bricks and Mortar" and now I have taken to writing some of the precious memories of my youth. I hope that my jottings of a time in my formative years might also awaken your own memories of a similar era in your own life and if so then that is my gift to you. A time without responsibility or care, when life was all before us, and tomorrow was a world away. We lived for the here and now; days were long and weeks longer. I hope you enjoy my words as much as I have enjoyed writing them.

"blink / and the outline is lost" As a said place gathers together poems written since Keepsache (2011). The book is shaped around 'I'm on the Train', a sequence prompted by and on a repeated train journey from home to work through parts of Devon and Cornwall. It returns to the spirit of John Hall's early book, Days. In each case the poems arise from the contingencies of the everyday and respond to the language demands that these seem to make. Before and after this sequence are clusters of individual poems, including the title poem, a fragmentary meditation suggested by reading the philosopher, Emmanuel Levinas. All the poems share a sense that poetry, among its other qualities, is also a mode - or a set of modes - of thinking: the saying of the world continues to matter, as does its unsaying, and that this by no means brings ease: the broken lines that constitute poetry negotiate ambivalent relations with the continuities of speech, with syntax, with the carefulness of thought.

The surgeon Thomas Pettigrew (1791–1865) was interested in all aspects of antiquity. He gained fame in society through his mummy-unwrapping parties, and his History of Egyptian Mummies is also reissued in the Cambridge Library Collection. His interest in the early history of medicine is evidenced by this edition of a work by John Hall, which was published by the Percy Society in 1844. Hall was a surgeon, born 1529/30, who published this work in 1565 as an appendix to his translation of the work of the thirteenth-century surgeon Lanfranc of Milan. Little is known about Hall except that he practised medicine in Maidstone, Kent, and had published acrostic verses. He was vociferous in his indignation against fraudulent medicine, and this work describes nine incidents where quacks, both male and female, had visited Maidstone and offered miraculous cures to the gullible: Hall himself was involved in prosecuting some of them.
