Written in the course of his conversion to Catholicism, Newman's "Essay on the Development of Christian Doctrine" ranks among the most decisive breakthroughs in systematic and historical theology of the modern era. Newman confronts the age-old problem, which he had wrestled with for his entire life, of how Christian doctrine can develop over time while retaining its roots in the original revelation of Christ. Newman first shows that constructive development is a natural, even predictable consequence of Christ's investment of authority in the Church. He then provides clear, historically grounded criteria for distinguishing authentic developments from false novelties and fads. The result is a profound interpretation and defense of the Church's mission and of its power to proclaim the whole counsel of God.

Newman is a magnificent guide for all those who perceive that the key, the focal point and the goal of all human history is to be found in Christ.-St. John Paul IICarefully composed over twenty years, Newman's Essay in Aid of a Grammar of Assent is an acknowledged masterpiece both for its apologetic response to atheistic naturalism and its positive contribution to the Catholic theology of faith. Newman confronts the dilemma of modern skepticism through a sustained investigation of what it means for the mind to give assent. He shows how the believer, who encounters the light of Christ, can give a certain assent to the propositions of the faith even in the absence of demonstrative proof. Blessed John Henry Cardinal Newman was England's greatest Catholic convert and theologian of the nineteenth century. Newman's many written contributions to Catholic theology and culture include An Essay on the Development of Christian Doctrine, The Idea of a University, and Apologia pro Vita Sua. He was beatified by Pope Benedict XVI in 2010.

One of the leading Christian theologians of the nineteenth century, John Henry Newman (1801–90) was already a famous and controversial figure, as the leader of the Oxford Movement, by the time he published these lectures in 1838. He was still a Church of England vicar, but in 1845 he would join the Roman Catholic Church and eventually become a cardinal. The thirteen lectures here, addressing the doctrine of salvation through faith, cover issues of obedience, righteousness, Christ's resurrection, faith as the sole source of justification, the role of rites and works, and that of preaching. Offering a complementary rather than dichotomous interpretation of the competing theological positions, this work reveals the progress of Newman's thinking and reflects his journey towards leaving the Church of England.

This novel about a young man's intellectual and spiritual development was the first work John Henry Newman wrote after entering the Roman Catholic Church in 1845. The story describes the perplexing questions and doubts Charles Reding experiences while attending Oxford. Though intending to avoid the religious controversies that are being heatedly debated at the university, Reding ends up leaving the Church of England and becoming a Catholic. A former Anglican clergyman who was later named a Catholic cardinal, Newman wrote this autobiographical novel to illustrate his own reasons for embracing Catholicism.

This newly edited version of John Henry Newman’s Apologia Pro Vita Sua sheds new light on Newman’s celebrated account of his passage from the Church of England to the Roman Catholic Church and repositions his narrative within the context of transformative religious journeys of other Victorian intellectuals. Frank M. Turner is the first historian of Victorian thought, religion, and culture to edit Newman’s classic autobiographical narrative. Drawing on extensive research in contemporary printed materials and archives, Turner’s powerfully revisionist Introduction reevaluates and challenges the historical adequacy of previous interpretations of Newman’s life and of the Apologia itself. He further presents Newman’s volume as a response to ultramontane assertions of papal authority in the l860s. In addition to numerous explanatory textual annotations, the volume includes an Appendix featuring six important Anglican sermons that providesignificant insights into Newman’s thought during the years recounted in the Apologia.

Heart to Heart: A Cardinal Newman Prayer Book is a comprehensive gathering of the luminous prayers of the newly beatified Cardinal John Henry Newman. The only Newman prayer book, it is ideal for both those who love Newman's work and for those getting to know Newman for the first time. A priest and scholar, Newman was among the most famous modern converts to Catholicism. He was beatified by Pope Benedict XVI in 2010. Newman also had a tremendous impact on such twentieth-century Christian thinkers as G. K. Chesterton, C. S. Lewis, and Pope Benedict. His prayers are sincere, emotionally charged cries to God, as well as thoughtful, meditative lessons on great Christian themes like the Trinity, the Passion, the Resurrection, the Holy Spirit, the Eucharist, Mary, confession, and the saints. Newman is still well-loved in the English-speaking world as both a writer and thinker, and as someone who loved Christ and the Church deeply. Unlike other compilations of Newman's work, Heart to Heart is the only complete prayer book, and it offers readers many of Newman's most famous and heart-felt prayers. The book comes with suggested devotions to help readers pray at leisure daily, weekly, and seasonally.
