First published in 1966, Improvisation embodies a revolutionary approach to the production of a play and the teaching of drama. It illustrates the way in which improvised dramatic situations help people to draw upon their imaginative resources and to extend awareness of themselves and others. It shows that drama can be a community activity that is deeply influential. The authors make many practical suggestions for situations and subjects upon which an improvisation may be built.

Literacy and Growth is a unique genealogical study of English teaching in the UK and abroad since the 18th century. Focusing specifically on the concepts of literacy and growth, this book explores key moments in the development of ideas about English teaching. Hodgson and Harris reveal the Enlightenment forebears of such contemporary concepts as “cultural capital” and “critical literacy”; the significance of “growth” to the writers and social critics who opposed Victorian Utilitarianism; and the 20th-century influences that established English as a humane study, including the Newbolt Report, the Cambridge Scrutiny group, and the London School of Percival Gurrey and James Britton. The authors examine unpublished Dartmouth Conference papers to reconsider John Dixon’s construction of “growth” in his seminal report Growth through English (1967). They reflect on the turbulent aftermath of Dartmouth, the changes in the “growth” model following the cultural turn in English studies, and the politics behind the shift from “English” to “literacy” in the 1990s. Importantly, they redefine the growth model for the 21st century to support teachers and students in the current context of performativity, high-stakes assessment, the “knowledge curriculum”, and artificial intelligence. Essential reading for tutors and students of English and literacy as well as policymakers in the subject area, this book will engage all those interested in the history and philosophy of English in education. It will be a key resource for those involved in the education and training of English teachers, as well as those undertaking research in English education.

A UNIVERSAL PROBLEM Every hour of every day, there are people around the world who struggle to find things. They look for things that don't exist or look for things that do exist but have no idea where to find them. When a family member dies, the problems begin. It's often a family or close friend who inherit the daunting task of finding important papers without knowing whether or not they exist and if they do exist, where to find them. They may need to find a birth certificate, marriage certificate, insurance policies, house deeds, mortgage papers and so on. Sometimes they'll look for papers that have been lost or mislaid. Sometimes they'll search for hours or days looking for something that doesn't actually exist. They'll search for answers to questions such as: Did he/she have a Will? What were their final wishes? How about their views on organ donation? Did they have life insurance? (25% never get paid out because the policy can't be found ) Did they have savings or investments? Where might they have kept a record of passwords? Where would they have kept bank account details? How many pensions do they have? What were their previous addresses? Where are the house deeds? Did they enter into an equity release scheme? What were their final wishes regarding cherished possessions or funeral arrangements? Sadly, too few people write these things down and family and friends may never know what their dying wishes were. CAN THE PROBLEM BE AVOIDED? The answer is YES. The solution is a simple one. It's a book with the self-explanatory title: WHERE TO FIND THINGS WHEN I'M GONE. The book comprises ninety pages, which, after being filled in by the owner, explains precisely where to find things when I'm gone. Problem solved.
