KülluseühiskondJohn Kenneth Galbraith (1908-2006) sündis Kanadas, kuid õppis California ülikoolis Berkeleys, töötas noore õppejõuna põllumajandusökonoomika alal Harvardis, täiendas end 1938. aastal Cambridge'is Inglismaal.

'One of the most engrossing books I have ever read' Daily TelegraphJohn Kenneth Galbraith's now-classic account of the 1929 stock market collapse remains the definitive book on the most disastrous cycle of boom and bust in modern times. Vividly depicting the causes, effects, aftermath and long-term consequences of financial meltdown, Galbraith also describes the people and the corporations who were affected by the catastrophe. With its depiction of the 'gold-rush fantasy' ingrained in America's psychology, The Great Crash 1929 remains a penetrating study of human greed and folly.

The world has become increasingly separated into the haves and have-nots. In The Culture of Contentment, renowned economist John Kenneth Galbraith shows how a contented class--not the privileged few but the socially and economically advantaged majority--defend their comfortable status at a cost. Middle-class voting against regulation and increased taxation that would remedy pressing social ills has created a culture of immediate gratification, leading to complacency and hampering long-term progress. Only economic disaster, military action, or the eruption of an angry underclass seem capable of changing the status quo. A groundbreaking critique, The Culture of Contentment shows how the complacent majority captures the political process and determines economic policy.

In Economics in Perspective, renowned economist John Kenneth Galbraith presents a compelling and accessible history of economic ideas, from Aristotle through the twentieth century. Examining theories of the past that have a continuing modern resonance, he shows that economics is not a timeless, objective science, but is continually evolving as it is shaped by specific times and places. From Adam Smith's theories during the Industrial Revolution to those of John Maynard Keynes after the Great Depression, Galbraith demonstrates that if economic ideas are to remain relevant, they must continually adapt to the world they inhabit. A lively examination of economic thought in historical context, Economics in Perspective shows how the field has evolved across the centuries.

Money is nothing more than what is commonly exchanged for goods or services, so why has understanding it become so complicated? In Money, renowned economist John Kenneth Galbraith cuts through the confusions surrounding the subject to present a compelling and accessible account of a topic that affects us all. He tells the fascinating story of money, the key factors that shaped its development, and the lessons that can be learned from its history. He describes the creation and evolution of monetary systems and explains how finance, credit, and banks work in the global economy. Galbraith also shows that, when it comes to money, nothing is truly new--least of all inflation and fraud.

American Capitalism: The Concepts of Countervailing Power by John Kenneth Galbraith is a comprehensive analysis of the American capitalist system. The book explores the concept of countervailing power, which refers to the balance of power between corporations, labor unions, and government agencies. Galbraith argues that countervailing power is essential for maintaining a healthy capitalist system, as it prevents any one group from gaining too much control and exploiting the others. The book covers a wide range of topics, including the history of American capitalism, the role of government in regulating the economy, the power of corporations and labor unions, and the impact of technological advancements on the economy. Galbraith also discusses the ways in which countervailing power has evolved over time, and how it has been weakened in recent years. Throughout the book, Galbraith provides numerous examples to illustrate his arguments, drawing on historical events and contemporary issues. He also offers suggestions for how countervailing power can be strengthened in the future, in order to ensure a more equitable and sustainable capitalist system. Overall, American Capitalism: The Concepts of Countervailing Power is a thought-provoking and insightful analysis of the American economic system. It is a must-read for anyone interested in understanding the complexities of capitalism and the role of countervailing power in maintaining a healthy economy. John Kenneth Galbraith's classic examination of the 1929 financial collapse. Arguing that the 1929 stock market crash was precipitated by rampant speculation in the stock market, Galbraith notes that the common denominator of all speculative episodes is the belief of participants that they can become rich without work. It was Galbraith's belief that a good knowledge of what happened in 1929 was the best safeguard against its recurrence. Atlantic Monthly wrote, "Economic writings are seldom notable for their entertainment value, but this book is. Galbraith's prose has grace and wit, and he distills a good deal of sardonic fun from the whopping errors of the nation's oracles and the wondrous antics of the financial community."

With searing wit and incisive commentary, John Kenneth Galbraith redefined America's perception of itself in The New Industrial State, one of his landmark works. The United States is no longer a free-enterprise society, Galbraith argues, but a structured state controlled by the largest companies. Advertising is the means by which these companies manage demand and create consumer "need" where none previously existed. Multinational corporations are the continuation of this power system on an international level. The goal of these companies is not the betterment of society, but immortality through an uninterrupted stream of earnings. First published in 1967, The New Industrial State continues to resonate today.

John Kenneth Galbraith's third novel, A Tenured Professor, is at once an intriguing tale of morality and a comic delight. Montgomery Martin, a Harvard economics professor, creates a stock forecasting model, which makes it possible for him to uncover society's hidden agendas. Seeking proof that human folly has no limit when motivated by greed, Martin initiates mass hysteria that causes investors to assume that up is the only direction. Hailed as "Galbraith's wisest and wittiest" novel (New York Times), A Tenured Professor is an impudently satirical tale.
