Ready to learn how to be a doctor? Well, neither was John... #1 Best Seller" I stayed up far too late, often crying with laughter, reading about the medical mishaps and blunders..." #1 New York Times Bestselling Author, Lauren Weisberger (The Devil Wears Prada and When Life Gives You Lululemons)Playing Doctor is a medical memoir full of laugh-out-loud tales, born from chaotic, disjointed, and frightening nights on hospital wards during John Lawrence's medical training and time as a junior doctor. This candid autobiography will demystify medical education and inspire you. First published in 1999. This book will help professions and professionals to identify their contribution to society and to understand the argument in which they must engage if they are to justify their conduct. Because of their specialized expertise and power, the task is both difficult and pressing. The work is divided into two parts. Part 1 discusses the concepts ‘ethics’ and ‘professional conduct’, indicating their dimensions and contested nature. In each case, following examination and analysis of relevant literature, a conceptual framework or model is proposed for locating instances of, in turn, ethics and professional conduct. In part 2, the model of ethical choice is used to discuss the ethical justification of professional conduct in the various forms, locations, and stages provided by its social setting. In this way, it provides grounding arguments for relevant action by professionals and others dealing with professionals. The book concludes with a proposal for a national standing commission on the professions.

International journalist John Lawrence takes the reader at kaleidoscopic speed through high drama and rib-tickling humour as he relives nearly twelve years of adventures in sub-Saharan Africa. His racy memoir swings from west coast to east coast, with a detour to Mauritius, as he vividly describes the everyday lives of both humble and famous Africans and the amazing array of animals that share this vast continent. Lawrence pays homage to the literary genius of Nigerian authors and is spellbound by the Kenyan landscape, described by the popular novelist Wilbur Smith as a microcosm of Africa. He survives an armed hold-up in Nairobi and a close shave with a hippopotamus that charges his small boat on a Kenyan lake. And he fears for his life, and that of his wife, when his elderly driver, who claims to be a prince, threatens to abandon them on a jungle road.

Not everyone chooses the streets. Sometimes, when everything is taken away, it's all that's left... The slums of Shindjin have long since been the champion of poverty. Violence and extortion are commonplace, where one's fate can literally be determined by a roll of the dice. A place where the fallout of these actions fall onto the shoulders of children. Shou and Jun are two such children, torn from the comfort of the lives they knew. Now thrust into an environment where organized crime IS law. With nowhere to turn, they're forced to become the very thing that ruined their lives.
The Complete Cases of Cass Blue, Volume 1
New York-based private investigator Cass Blue is a morally flexible tough guy who backs up his hard-boiled rhetoric with frequent applications of the blackjack he carries in a hip pocket. No case is too seedy or sordid for him to take, and he's capable of taking as much as he dishes out when it's necessary. The cops don't trust him much more than they do the criminals, but that doesn't keep him from giving clients full value for their retainers. With the dubious assistance of speakeasy owner Al Lascoine, Cass sasses and slugs his way through a succession of Depression-era adventures. The Cass Blue yarns are related in the first person by stylish pulp writer John Lawrence, who guides his protagonist through a maze of conventional plots and countless gunfights. What the series lacks in polish and innovation, it makes up for with vigorous action and the tough-as-nails attitude that gave Dime Detective the distinctive flavor that made it the most important crime pulp excepting the legendary Black Mask.

Who says a little chick can t make big, loud animal noises? Most little chicks barely make a peep, but not this little chick While his brothers and sisters nestle close to their mother hen, this little chick struts off on his own to make some new friends in the farmyard. And he has a wonderful time of it - sliding off the back of a shiny pink pig, hopping along with frogs, skipping with a flock of frisky sheep, and imitating all the sounds these animals make. Full of playful detail, John Lawrence s bold, energetic engravings will keep toddlers smiling, long after the oinking, mooing, baaing, and quacking are over."
