The 18th century was a wealth of knowledge, exploration and rapidly growing technology and expanding record-keeping made possible by advances in the printing press. In its determination to preserve the century of revolution, Gale initiated a revolution of its own: digitization of epic proportions to preserve these invaluable works in the largest archive of its kind. Now for the first time these high-quality digital copies of original 18th century manuscripts are available in print, making them highly accessible to libraries, undergraduate students, and independent scholars. With a foreword by Iain Sinclair. London is an ancient city, whose foundation dates back literally thousands of years into the legendary prehistory of these islands. Not surprisingly it has accumulated a large number of stories, both historic and mythical, during this period, many of which, though faithfully recorded at the time, have lain almost forgotten in dusty libraries throughout the city. The Secret Lore of London is a guide to the legends, including a discussion of their importance as part of the oral tradition of Britain, combining Prehistoric, Celtic, Arthurian, Roman, Saxon and Norman levels - each of which has contributed to the many-layered life of the city. The first part contains a unique selection of essays (some printed here for the first time) by experts in their fields, each of whom possesses a unique interest in the legends of these islands, and who have written widely on associated themes. The second part of the book will consist of a Gazetteer of the sites mentioned which are still in existence, together with various other sites of associated interest, compiled by the Editor, the contributors, and members of the London Earth Mysteries Group. This part will be fully updated and extended to include many more sites. The result is a wide ranging and wholly fascinating book, with wide sales application possible. A series of appendixes will include William Stukley's extraordinary document The Brill, which relates to the ancient prehistoric sites around the area of present day St. Pancras, and excerpts from some of the best known 19th and early 20th century works on Legendary London by Lewis Spence and Harold BayleyContributors to the book are: Nigel PennickJohn MatthewsCaroline WiseCaitlín MatthewsCarol Clancy R. Looking back at a rich and varied history that spans over 160 years, this book takes the reader on a journey exploring the locomotives built by Brush Traction and its numerous incarnations since 1865\. In the very early days a diverse selection of vehicles were turned out including carriages, wagons, tramcars and even automobiles before production was concentrated on locomotives. We look closely at the important developments and locos produced, starting out from a small back street concern and going on to become a huge world famous manufacturing company. The UK is fortunate to still witness some of the iconic locomotives built by Brush, while further afield their engines continue working hard in many foreign lands including Hong Kong and New Zealand. A very large number of images were sifted through before the final selection of over 200 black and white and colour photos were chosen to capture the amazing variety of motive power from over the decades. In separate chapters, steam, diesel and electrics feature along with detailed introductions and captions that give the reader a real insight into the long list of locos that passed through the gates of the Loughborough Works. Early steam engines, one-off prototypes, famous diesel classes and state of the art electrics all come together to make up the amazing history of Brush Traction locomotives.

What is ‘talent’? How do I know if my acting is ‘moment-to-moment’? Do you know your 'secondary action' and employ your 'sense memory'? The idioms of acting can both delight and frustrate. While enthusiastic theatregoers and aspiring actors may be attracted to studio slang, theorists and practitioners of the craft will argue fiercely over the derivation, meaning and use of professional language terms, while academics dispute the very philosophical basis of key acting concepts, such as ‘authenticity’ and ‘truth’. This book is for all these communities of interest and provides a practical and reliable evidence-based account of the most significant ideas about acting in circulation today. A meta-analytical and unique account, this is the first book in the field to use digital computational methodologies to produce a comprehensive, word and sentiment analysis of keytexts. John Matthews’ expertise and accessible style renders the massive dataset underpinning the research endlessly accessible and provides many surprises. Organized in digestible sections and pithy ‘keyword’ subheadings, this book, alongside its companion volume, Training Actors, makes a large and complex topic easily referenceable and eminently readable. It reveals the politics and ideologies at play in both dominant and niche acting schools, indicating how ideas and practices have developed over time as well as where acting theory and practice is heading.

Three Hundred Warriors. One Survivor. An Ancient Song of Glory and Loss. One of Britain's oldest epic poems returns in this vivid and haunting new poetic version. The Gododdin is a song of courage and catastrophe-a lament for three hundred warriors who rode out from the Old North to face overwhelming odds at the Battle of Catraeth, and never returned. Attributed to the early medieval bard Aneirin, this stark and beautiful work stands alongside Beowulf and The Iliad as a foundational text of heroic literature. In this powerful new rendering, mythologist and poet John Matthews approaches The Gododdin not as a literal translator, but as a poet listening for the living voice behind the ancient words. Drawing on decades of study and immersion in early British and Celtic tradition, Matthews reshapes the fragmented original into a sequence of lucid, emotionally charged poems that speak directly to modern readers-without sacrificing the gravity or mythic force of the source. This is not simply a battle poem. It is a threnody: a roll call of names and deeds, a meditation on loyalty, honor, intoxication, and loss, and a bard's act of remembrance for friends who fell and a world already passing away. The book is richly illustrated with evocative paintings by Meg Falconer, created in the landscape where the battle is believed to have taken place, deepening the atmosphere of violence, beauty, and sorrow that permeates the poem. For readers of Celtic mythology, early medieval poetry, and heroic epics, The Gododdin of Aneirin offers a rare encounter with one of the earliest voices of the British imagination-still singing across fifteen centuries of time.

Reveals forgotten Arthurian lore hidden in the prophetic language of a medieval text • Includes the story of Merlin’s birth as the son of a demon, how he was born already able to speak, how his magic ensured he was not killed by his babysitter, and details of his affair with the Lady of the Lake • Shares stories of Percival’s first contact with the Grail and King Arthur’s connection with the legendary mystical king Prester John • Includes early Welsh prophecies attributed to Merlin, prophecies compiled by historian Geoffrey of Monmouth, and the letter of Prester John that inspired Columbus Maarten Haverkamp acquired a French book from 1498 titled The Prophecies of Merlin that claimed to be prophecies given by the legendary magician. The book was really a compilation of documents collected by an unknown 13th century monk. Working with John Matthews, Maarten spent five years translating the mysteries hidden in this obscure book. Presenting their translation and commentary, the authors share forgotten stories of early Arthurian literature and magic. They share the tale of Merlin’s birth from a demon, how he was born able to speak, and how his magic ensured he was not killed by his guardian. Merlin’s affair with the Lady of the Lake is detailed, ending with his imprisonment in a tomb. Other stories include Percival’s first contact with the Grail and King Arthur’s connection with the mystical king Prester John. The authors show how The Prophecies of Merlin sheds new light on the world of King Arthur and the women who learned magic from Merlin. To reveal the esoteric meaning of this work, the authors include Welsh prophecies attributed to Merlin (translated by John and Caitlín Matthews), other prophecies attributed to Merlin that were compiled by Geoffrey of Monmouth, and the original letter of Prester John that inspired the Polo family and Columbus to search for India. Discovering a hitherto lost or forgotten book about Merlin and King Arthur is a rare event these days. Yet here the authors present a virtually forgotten and, to date, untranslated book, which includes much that is new—and exciting—about the legendary king and his magical adviser. Through their translation and insightful passage by passage commentary, they reveal secrets long hidden behind the obscure language of the prophetic utterances.

The consecration of the city of Constantinople in 330 CE on the emplacement of the Greek city of Byzantium was one of the most important moments in the whole of Graeco-Roman history. The foundation of the city responded to important changes in the social, political, and cultural character of the Roman empire of the first three centuries. In its role as the capital of the Byzantine Empire, it provided a setting for a new religion and the framework for more than a thousand years of continued Roman history in the east. From Byzantium to Constantinople explores, in great detail, the Graeco-Roman context of the city and its early history in the first century of its identity as the new Rome. The book surveys the events that led to the establishment of Constantinople, the circumstances of its foundation, and the first hundred years of its development as an imperial capital city resting upon a new religious identity. Based on a description and critical evaluation of the sources of the earlier history of the city of Byzantium, it attends to one document in particular--the Notitia Urbis Constantinopolitanae--a regional survey of the resources and monuments of the city, written in the early fifth century but preserving many details of the city as it had developed from its Greek and Roman background. Ranging from descriptions of Constantinople's facilities for the fighting of fires and distributions of bread, to the number of churches established in this period, the Notitia allows for a study of the economic and social diversity and housing conditions of its regions. Constantinople, the new Rome founded by the first Christian emperor, was not built in a day nor did it lack an earlier history as an important city in a strategic location. The integration of these diverse and variously problematic sources enables the foundation of Constantinople to be understood in terms of a developing understanding of its role, and as a series of initiatives that could be accommodated by the resources of the government as it responded to new and distinctly non-Classical loyalties.
