John Neal

"Account of the Great Conflagration in Portland" offers a firsthand narrative of the devastating fire that struck Portland, Maine, in 1866. Penned by John Neal, this historical account provides a vivid reconstruction of the events, tracing the fire's rapid spread and its profound impact on the city and its inhabitants. Neal's detailed observations capture the atmosphere of chaos and the communal response to the disaster. This book serves as an invaluable resource for understanding the history of urban fires in America and the challenges faced by communities in the wake of such catastrophes. It illuminates the social, economic, and technological factors that contributed to the fire's severity, while also highlighting the resilience of Portland's citizens as they began the process of rebuilding. "Account of the Great Conflagration in Portland" remains a compelling and informative record of a pivotal moment in the city's past.
