Many attempts have been made to reduce the harms caused by business and to make companies become socially responsible. This book approaches the subject from a new perspective arguing that reflexive law offers the best means to align the interests of large companies with those of society and that recent developments in European company law fit a reflexive model. A reflexive company law, rather than trying to directly regulate companies, aims to affect internal decision-making processes to make companies responsive to outside interests and prevent them from operating as closed systems singularly focused on shareholder value. In this vein, the EU has recently imposed new obligations on companies to develop corporate sustainability reporting and due diligence processes as part of its objective to create a climate-neutral and sustainable economy. This book presents an argument for how the ‘societal company’ – a company that has an internal culture of transnational responsibility to do no harm but that retains the autonomy necessary to be economically productive – can be established through reflexive law. The book will appeal to researchers, policy makers and lawyers interested in corporate sustainability, regulatory theory, company law and EU law.

Proverbs from the Irish language - seanfhocail - hark back to a time when Ireland and its people were predominantly agricultural, poor and Catholic; though centuries old, they are integral to a sense of culture and are rich in wisdom that remains relevant to this day. The book, which includes a seanfhocal for each day of the year alongside commentary and practical exercises for improving vocabulary, covers such wide-ranging topics as: the farming life, nature and weather, food and drink, wealth and poverty, health and happiness, the power of God and the Church, and pastimes and pleasures. An ideal gift for seasoned Irish speakers, as well as those coming to the language for the first time, Daily Wisdom is a perfect introduction to the untold riches of the Irish proverb tradition.

To commemorate the centenary of Francis Ledwidge's death in the Battle of Passchendaele, John Quinn has compiled a selection of writings, both by Ledwidge and those closest to him. These poems, diary entries and letters follow Ledwidge's life from budding poet in County Meath to soldier facing the horrors of the battle on the western front. We discover, through Ledwidge's colourful verse, his reactions to the world around him, life as an Irish soldier in the British Army during the First World War, and his response to the execution of close friend Thomas McDonagh in the Easter Rising of 1916. Featuring an assessment by Seamus Heaney, this book will make a fine addition to any poetry and history lover's collection.

Revered and Reviled: A Re-Examination of Vatican Council I
Revered and Reviled explores the ways that Vatican Council I influenced the important issues of papal primacy and the infallible teaching magisterium of the Pope. The book clarifies and corrects many misunderstood concepts and conclusions about the first Council. Although this is, first and foremost, a church history, it is written with the educated lay reader in mind. Vatican Council I laid the groundwork for critical issues relating to the Pope's power, especially the subjects of papal primacy and infallibility. The Council's conclusion remain important today, as Pope Francis looks toward synodality as the way of the Catholic Church. In essence, Revered and Reviled is hugely important because it is the first book to correct long-held misconceptions that have guided the philosophical position of the Catholic church for the last 145 years. With broad distribution, it should impact Catholic scholars, theologians and the faithful around the world.
