John Taylor

Soccer is the most popular sport in the world. It is also an endless scientific panorama. Every movement by the players and each interaction with the ball involves physics, fluid mechanics, biology, and physiology, to name just a few of the scientific disciplines. In a book that targets middle and high school players, Taylor begins with a history of soccer and its physical and mathematical aspects. He then addresses important questions such as how and why a ball bounces, how the ball spins, and what these dynamics mean for the game. He introduces readers to the science of kicking, heading, and trapping and looks at the sources of the energy required to run, jump, and kick for an entire game. Taylor then puts it all together by following a sequence of plays and describing the science behind tactical manoeuvres. Sidebars and appendices allow those with a more mathematical bent to follow the physics and perform experiments to see the effects of phenomena like drag, bounce, and spin. In addition, key terminology is highlighted, explained in the text, and summarized in the glossary.

The notion of proof is central to mathematics yet it is one of the most difficult aspects of the subject to teach and master. In particular, undergraduate mathematics students often experience difficulties in understanding and constructing proofs. Understanding Mathematical Proof describes the nature of mathematical proof, explores the various techniques that mathematicians adopt to prove their results, and offers advice and strategies for constructing proofs. It will improve students’ ability to understand proofs and construct correct proofs of their own. The first chapter of the text introduces the kind of reasoning that mathematicians use when writing their proofs and gives some example proofs to set the scene. The book then describes basic logic to enable an understanding of the structure of both individual mathematical statements and whole mathematical proofs. It also explains the notions of sets and functions and dissects several proofs with a view to exposing some of the underlying features common to most mathematical proofs. The remainder of the book delves further into different types of proof, including direct proof, proof using contrapositive, proof by contradiction, and mathematical induction. The authors also discuss existence and uniqueness proofs and the role of counter examples.

String Of Pearls, Book Two of the Faith-Promoting Series is a collection of missionary experiences, revelation, and beginnings. The first section of this book is the account of an emigrant who lived among the Ponca Indians, a tribe east of the Mississippi in the Ohio River Valley. W. C. S. describes hardships that greatly increased his faith since he looked on his experience as an "Indian Mission". Other accounts include the missionary experiences of Jedediah M. Grant, a future member of the Church's First Presidency, President John Taylor's journey across the plains and an unusual prophecy that was received, and the commencement of missionary work in Ireland, with experiences of Matthias Cowley, David W. Patten and several other early Saints. The book ends with the poem "Joseph Smith's First Prayer", the poem upon which the LDS hymn is based. The Faith-Promoting Series includes 17 books which were largely written by Deseret Book founder George Q. Cannon, but also include books by Wilford Woodruff and other early LDS leaders.

"The characters Taylor has created for his 4-book series are personable and capable, but they are not super-heroes, and I'm glad they aren't. I cannot relate to the dangers they face, but I can relate to their feelings about what is happening to them, and can almost feel their panic as they face an unknown future. This book in the series creates a new awakening love in the midst of the horrors of friends dying all around them.""These people at their core (before clinging to their lives) seem like anyone you may have met at some point in your life, and perhaps you have friends like them. I am quite glad I've never had to face any kind of terror and the horror that these folks endured. Taylor allows the reader to watch how his characters react in circumstances of abject fear and panic and of knowing there is nowhere that is completely safe." Tom Boyd and his families lives are upturned when it finally happened, zombies formed and where starting to take over all the major cities in the world. Tom being an ex-soldier had to protect his family from horrifying, untimely death.
