John Walsh

The host of America's Most Wanted, John Walsh has formed a vital partnership with the public, the media, and law enforcement that has led to the capture of hundreds of the worst serial killers, kidnappers, pedophiles, and rapists of our time. In Public Enemies he reveals the cost -- the blood, sweat, and tears -- behind the relentless pursuit of hard justice, in such infamous cases as:Kyle Bell: A lifelong sexual predator whose madness culminated in the slaying of an eleven-year-old North Dakota girl. Bell was one of the only fugitives AMW had to capture twice -- and his case stirred more outrage than any other broadcast in AMW's history. Kathleen Soliah: This accused Symbionese Liberation Army terrorist disappeared in 1969 only to resurface twenty-five years later as suburban housewife and soccer mom Sara Jane Olson. Her arrest, following AMW's profile of Soliah and her former SLA partner James Kilgore, incited a stunning controversy. Rafael Resendez-Ramirez: aka The Railroad Killer. A sociopathic drifter, he rode the Texas rails, stopping only to rape and kill. His case was first brought to the public eye by AMW, and it was a secret call to the program's hot line that ultimately led to his surrender. In those and other gripping true-crime profiles, John Walsh exposes the behind-the-scenes drama of the groundbreaking show, and what actually unfolds between the crimes and the captures -- the vital leads from strangers, the dangerous manhunts, the developments cut from the AMW broadcasts, and the dogged investigations by authorities. He divulges stunning lapses in the judicial process that release monsters to the streets time and again. He takes readers inside the hearts and souls of the grieving families, and gives eyewitness accounts of the dramatic final moments when fugitives are finally taken down. An outspoken and unstoppable crusader, John Walsh ignites Public Enemies with righteous anger and gut-level emotion. But his heartfelt motto echoes throughout: I truly believe, with all my heart and soul, that together we can make a difference. It's a conviction Walsh offers as inspiration to the innocents affected by crime, and to all who feel powerless in the face of unfathomable evil.

Walsh, Caldwell and Jureidini offer an expansive linguistic perspective on the evaluative language prevalent in the world of professional sports. This book presents a close linguistic analysis of evaluative language in sport. Drawing on appraisal theory and data from three distinct sporting contexts – songs and chants in football stadiums, television commentary and coach discourse – it examines the critical role played by affectual, judgemental and appreciative language. In the spirit of sociolinguistics, this book also considers the history and culture of the respective sporting contexts. Connections are made between the evaluative language expressed by supporters, commentators and coaches and the invocation of power and solidarity. Evaluative Language in Sports gives insight into some of the key language practices that contribute to professional sports culture: a communal and combative world of winners and losers, ‘us and ‘them’. An innovative and valuable book that will appeal to students, researchers and sports enthusiasts interested in sports communication and language, sociolinguistics and media studies.

Maintaining secrets, credentials, and nonhuman identities in secure ways is an important, though often overlooked, aspect of secure software development. Cloud migration and digital transformation have led to an explosion of nonhuman identities-like automation scripts, cloud native apps, and DevOps tools-that need to be secured across multiple cloud and hybrid environments. DevOps security often addresses vulnerability scanning, but it neglects broader discussions like authentication, authorization, and access control, potentially leaving the door open for breaches. That's where an identity security strategy focused on secrets management can help. In this practical book, authors John Walsh and Uzi Ailon provide conceptual frameworks, technology overviews, and practical code snippets to help DevSecOps engineers, cybersecurity engineers, security managers, and software developers address use cases across CI/CD pipelines, Kubernetes and cloud native, hybrid and multicloud, automation/RPA, IOT/OT, and more. You'll learn:The fundamentals of authentication, authorization, access control, and secrets managementWhat developers need to know about managing secrets and identity to build safer appsWhat nonhuman identities, secrets, and credentials are-and how to secure themHow developers work with their cross-function peers to build safer appsHow identity security fits into modern software development practices

This Element aims to deepen our understanding of how the fields of multilingualism, second language acquisition and minority language revitalisation have largely overlooked the question of queer sexual identities among speakers of the languages under study. Based on case studies of four languages experiencing differing degrees of minoritisation – Irish, Breton, Catalan and Welsh – it investigates how queer people navigate belonging within the binary of speakers/non-speakers of minoritised languages while also maintaining their queer identities. Furthermore, it analyses how minoritised languages are dealing linguistically with the growing need for 'gender-fair' or 'gender-neutral' language. The marginalisation of queer subjects in these strands of linguistics can be traced to the historical dominance of the Fishmanian model of 'Reversing Language Shift' (RLS), which assumed the importance of the deeply heteronormative model of 'intergenerational transmission' of language as fundamental to language revitalisation contexts.

The official retrospective for the British cinematic masterpiece The Third Man, directed by Carol Reed, written by Graham Greene, and starring Joseph Cotton and Orson Welles, on its 75th anniversary. On its release in 1949, Carol Reed's atmospheric film noir thriller The Third Man instantly became a classic, winning the Palm d'Or at Cannes, a BAFTA for Best British Film, and the Oscar for Best Cinematography. Featuring some of cinema's most memorable set pieces and quotable lines, the film's war-torn Viennese locations quickly etch themselves in the memory-the vast sewers, the Ferris wheel, the tree-lined cemetery. It marks one of those unusual conjunctions of script, director, subject, cast, and setting-and, of course, music-in which everything works. In time for the movie's 75th anniversary, this beautiful, illustrated book comprehensively covers the making of the movie, acknowledged as the masterwork of many of its key players: Carol Reed as director; cast members including Joseph Cotton and Orson Welles; novelist/screenwriter Graham Greene; and composer of the instantly recognizable zither score Anton Karas. The battle for ownership of the film between US producer David O. Selznick and the British producer Alexander Korda, which developed into protracted legal proceedings, is explored, as is the lasting influence the movie has had on modern filmmakers, such as Martin Scorsese. Author and filmmaker John Walsh has uncovered unpublished photos and new interviews on the identity of the real-life Third Man, making this stunning book a must-have for any film fan.
