Taking up any challenge, even an extreme one, for many people is not unusual, especially when the aim is to raise money to support a specific charity or other deserving cause. Often there is a direct link between the person taking on the challenge and the charity nominated to benefit from funds raised. Not all succeed, of course, even ending in heart break and sadly, tragic circumstances, at times. So, what happens when one, 57-year-old, unfit, overweight, ex-smoking individual decides to pit himself against one of the world's Seven Summits? Maybe it is a recipe for disaster on the face of it, some might even say foolhardy and risky but the events of the previous years that led to this attempt were compelling and after much consideration, made the urge too strong to ignore. The actual challenge was one thing but undertaking the preparation and importantly the fund raising, were extremely hard work, yet, at the same time fulfilling, fun and exhausting. Every Step of the Way not only charts the 12 months leading up to that week on Mount Kilimanjaro and details the actual climb but, additionally, looks into the reasons for attempting it, which began with one man being diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease, his appalling treatment in care, and the inevitable outcome.

Molyvos, a small seaside village once home to fishermen and shepherds but now a popular summer vacation destination, sits on the northern shore of the Greek island of Lesvos along a four-mile-wide stretch of the Aegean Sea, which separates Greece from Turkey. In the summer of 2015 Molyvos became an epicenter of the mass migration of some 450,000 refugees, mainly Syrians, Afghans, and Iraqis, who crossed from Turkey, fleeing war and brutal dictatorships in their home countries in search of safety in the European Union. In Molyvos John Webb chronicles the dramatic and fearless efforts of a small band of people who carried out a homemade yet full-fledged, around-the-clock rescue operation until international NGOs began to arrive. Between November 2014 and September 2015, Melinda McRostie, owner of a restaurant in Molyvos’s harbor, her family, and a small group of their friends, as well as Eric and Philippa Kempson, a skeleton coast guard crew, some local fishermen, and eventually summer tourists provided relief. During those months, they had no help from the outside-not from Greece, which was already mired in a serious fiscal crisis, not from the EU, which was struggling with its own economic and political issues, and not from any international aid organizations. Webb provides detailed accounts of refugees crossing the Mytilene Strait in both quiet and rough, frigid waters in boats on the verge of sinking. The Kempsons learned to guide the boats ashore and handled tragic landings in dangerous surf. Ordinary residents of Molyvos rescued thousands of refugees and offered them clothes, food, shelter, and counseling about where they could travel next in their search for safety and asylum. As the tourism industry suffered, a backlash began against the migrants and locals who were helping them, leading to discord in the community. Still, as the ranks of refugees swelled, the volunteer corps in Molyvos expanded its capacity to help.

Julian Lockhardt, the bombastic, heavy-drinking expat manager of the Samarang Hotel – the most prestigious hotel in Vientiane – is short on self-awareness, long on self-pity, and society, so he believes, has failed him. He is easily seduced by Asia’s many charms, and deeply resistant to any broader understanding of its underlying values.
Silent as the Falling Snow: My experience with bowel cancer
This is a short personal story about my experiences with bowel cancer. It is an account from the time of realising something was wrong, to referrals, undergoing investigations, diagnosis and treatment. I have tried to include the physical and emotional aspects of my condition as well as the processes that begin once we have a medical problem such as bowel cancer. This short story is framed around an 18-month period. I have mentioned everything that was going on at this time, because we do not exist in isolation. No matter what events take place for us as individuals, life goes on around us; the good, the bad and the ugly, including for me, the worry of my son's fight with kidney failure compared to the joy of my wife being presented with the Dr Kate Granger award for compassionate care. This small book is aimed to be informative, sometimes humorous I hope, but above all to give insight into the thoughts, feelings and journey of a cancer sufferer. It aims to demystify the procedures, surgery and chemotherapy involved, hopefully accurately, but is written by someone who is not medically qualified and therefore there may be some inaccuracies. I hope it gives hope to those diagnosed with bowel cancer. It may also be of interest to those who wonder what it is like to have a cancer diagnosis. I will forever be indebted to the fast and competent actions of my wife and the amazing skills of my colorectal surgeon, Professor Mark Coleman. However, I would also like to thank the gastroenterologist, who identified the tumour, those who carried out the scans and interpreted them, the nurses who looked after me, the oncology team who monitored and administered my chemo and all friends and relatives for their emotional support. I cannot fault my care in the NHS; in my opinion it remains a wonderful institution, my care has been exemplary, and I owe a huge debt to all of the above.

The 18th century was a wealth of knowledge, exploration and rapidly growing technology and expanding record-keeping made possible by advances in the printing press. In its determination to preserve the century of revolution, Gale initiated a revolution of its own: digitization of epic proportions to preserve these invaluable works in the largest archive of its kind. Now for the first time these high-quality digital copies of original 18th century manuscripts are available in print, making them highly accessible to libraries, undergraduate students, and independent scholars. The eighteenth-century fascination with Greek and Roman antiquity followed the systematic excavation of the ruins at Pompeii and Herculaneum in southern Italy; and after 1750 a neoclassical style dominated all artistic fields. The titles here trace developments in mostly English-language works on painting, sculpture, architecture, music, theater, and other disciplines. Instructional works on musical instruments, catalogs of art objects, comic operas, and more are also included. ++++The below data was compiled from various identification fields in the bibliographic record of this title.
