Presenting a coherent interpretation of the development of economic and social policy in Britain since 1945, this book analyses the political assumptions underlying post-war economic policy. It traces these assumptions through the classic texts of Keynes and Beveridge, the architects of limited, non-socialist state intervention to secure the welfare state and full employment. Topics covered include: * 'Private saving' versus company pensions * The level and composition of employment in Britain

Compound Dilemmas

Compound Dilemmas

Michael Dean McGinnis; John Williams

For most of the period after World War II until the fall of the Soviet empire, there was a remarkable consensus in the United States in support of our policies toward the Soviet Union. This consensus resulted in enormous defense expenditures and in the development of a system of alliances that spanned the globe and marked a vast expansion of America's overseas obligations. Compound Dilemmas addresses the question of how such widespread domestic support for a very expensive and continual arms race developed. Current models of the arms race often fail to explain the persistence of American support or the pattern of the U. S. response to Soviet actions. Michael D. McGinnis and John T. Williams use social choice theory to offer a new understanding of popular support for U. S. Cold War policies, including the American arms buildup. The authors consider the use domestic actors made of information about Soviet military expenditures in developing consensus on the size and nature of the appropriate American military response. In addition, their use of game theory and statistical analysis offers new insights into how these methods might be employed to understand foreign policy questions. This book will appeal to political scientists interested particularly in methodology, international relations, and American aspects of the political system. It will also be of interest to readers seeking information about the Cold War and its arms race. Michael D. McGinnis is Associate Professor of Political Science, Indiana University. John T. Williams is Professor of Political Science, Indiana University.

Cardiff 1999. The city's booming. The Welsh Assembly kicks off in a welter of sexual scandal, fireworks and Shirley Bassey. So does the Rugby World Cup (well give or take the sexual scandal anyway). Cardiff 1999. Charlie Unger's dead, been lying in his flat for a week. Charlie was old Cardiff through and through. Like Dame Shirley, he was a black kid from Tiger Bay. He found fame and fortune in the fifties as a boxer, lightweight champion of the world. Charlie's funeral brought the Wurriyas back together again - five lost souls looking for a place in their city's brave new millennium.

Much of Mary Shelley's life reads like a compilation of some of the most lurid and sensationalist novels of her time. After the stormy years of her relationship with Percy Shelley, Mary went on to raise her one surviving son on her own, never sure of the loyalty of friends, threatened and intimidated by her dead husband's father. John Williams offers a thoughtful assessment of her literary achievement, set against the background of the evolution of the English novel in the politically volatile years of the early nineteenth century.

Around the year 776, the monk Beatus of the monastery of Santo Toribio compiled a commentary on the Apocalypse from the extensive library of patristic exegetical literature. This is the first publication to provide a thorough historical context for the origin and evolution of the tradition of Apocalypse imagery. Offering a Corpus of nearly 2000 illustrations, the five volumes of The Illustrated Beatus will show the complete Apocalypse cycle of thirty-two medieval manuscripts and fragments from the ninth to the thirteenth century. Volume I, the introductory text, deals with Beatus' biography and the questions surrounding his text and sources. Various hypotheses about the compilation, function, and development of the illustration cycles are discussed in detail, and the relevant problems and solutions proposed are also elucidated. Including tables, and an appendix of all the inscriptions accompanying the illustrations, a complete bibliography, and exhaustive indexes, these beautiful volumes capture the artistic creativity of the Spanish people.
Legitimacy in International Relations and the Rise and Fall of Yugoslavia
This book develops a conceptual model of legitimacy as a value-judgement in international relations in contrast to Weberian and legal approaches. The model is based on the interaction of the states-systemic value of order with a liberal ideal of the state and a free-market, liberal international economy. Whilst formulated as a principally Western model, the analysis of the rise and fall of Yugoslavia and the international response points towards a wider applicability as well as confirming the value of the concept as an analytical tool.
Estimating for Building & Civil Engineering Work

Estimating for Building & Civil Engineering Work

John Williams; Spence gedes

Architectural Press
1996
sidottu
It deals in a practical and reasonable way with many of the estimating problems which can arise where building and civil engineering works are carried out and to include comprehensive estimating data within the guidelines of good practice. The early part of the book has been completely rewritten to contain chapters useful to students and practitioners alike for the development of the estimating process resulting in the presentation of a tender for construction works. The second and major part of the book contains estimating data fully updated for the major elements in building and civil engineering work, including a new chapter on piling, and a wealth of constants for practical use in estimating. The estimating examples are based on the current edition of the Standard Method of Measurement for Building Works (SMM7). The comprehensive information on basic principles of estimating found in 'Spence Geddes' are still as valid today as the first edition. In this edition the prevailing rates of labour and costs of materials are taken whenever possible as a round figure. Readers will appreciate in the construction industry that prices are continually changing, rise and fall, and that worked examples should therefore be used as a guide to method of calculation substituting in any specific case the current rates applicable to it. In the case of plant output dramatic increases have been experienced in productivity over recent years and again estimators with their own records should substitute values appropriate to their work.
What Every Software Manager Must Know About Object Technology
The two biggest causes of failure of object-based projects are the software managers' lack of understanding of the technology or their inability to recognize that OT projects must be managed differently from other projects. What Every Software Manager Must Know to Succeed with Object Technology shows managers what object technology is and how to manage it effectively. It provides readers with a no-nonsense approach to object technology management, including effective guidelines on how to track the development of projects. This is the only book available that truly addresses the substantive issues that managers must address when implementing object technology. The author begins this book by providing a simple real world example to outline the technology and then shows managers the choices and tradeoffs available. Details of how to track and report progress on projects using iterative development techniques will be of particular interest to software managers.

What is the historical appeal of football? How diverse are its players, supporters and institutions throughout the world? What are its various traditions and how are these affected by pressures to modernize? In what ways does the game help to reinforce or overcome social differences and prejudices? How can we understand football’s subcultures, especially football hooligan ones? The 1994 World Cup Finals in the United States have again demonstrated the conflicts which exist around football over its international future. The multi-media age beckons new audiences for top-level matches, but worries remain that the historical and cultural appeal of football itself may be the real loser. The global game has a breadth of skills, playing techniques, supporting styles and ruling bodies. These are all subject to local and national traditions of team play and fan display. Modern commercial influences and international cultural links through players and fan styles, are accommodated within the game to an increasing extent. Yet, football’s ability to differentiate remains: at local, regional, national and even continental levels. In some cases the game’s traditions ensure that these differences are becoming as oppositional today as is modern football hooliganism. But, the overall picture is one of a game without frontiers - rich in historical and cultural detail, pluralistic in its traditions and identities. This volume brings together essays by leading academics and researchers writing on world football. Their studies draw on interdisciplinary researches in England, Scotland, France, Italy, Germany, Austria, Argentina and Australia. The book will be of interest to students of sports science, cultural studies and social science and to all those who simply enjoy football as the world's greatest sporting passion.
