Behind the Blue Beret is my memoir of my military enlistment in the United States Air Force as a Security Forces Member. Not only have I been involved in a number of law enforcement situations, air base defense attacks in a location that only a select few service members have ever traveled in, and humorous personal situations to boot. But I received numerous injuries to my back, and psychological trauma that relates to several million newer and hundreds of millions of older veterans throughout the world. For years when I was in the military I experienced so much and had a feeling of honor, courage, and self worth. I want to transfer this into my book. I have lived my life as a military member and take with me the stories, comradery, feelings, and situations with every chapter of this book that my fellow veterans can take with them and identify in their readings.

New Mexico is widely considered a center for the visual arts, but one of the lesser-known features of its art world is the Roswell Artist-in-Residence Program (RAIR) in southeastern New Mexico. Begun in 1967 by patron Donald Anderson, this program has been known by artists as the ""Gift of Time."" Artists whose forms include painting, sculpture, photography, printmaking, ceramics, textiles, and other media work without distraction for six months to one year. RAIR provides studio and living space, along with a monthly living stipend, and artists with families are encouraged to apply and attend. In celebration of RAIR's fortieth anniversary, Ann McGarrell, whose husband was one of the artists-in-residence, has written an anecdotal history of the Roswell program. In a town known for its UFO landings, ""Roswell's Artist-in-Residence"" program provides a contemporary counterpoint to the Southwest's traditional art forms. Additionally, RAIR has provided inspiration to many of New Mexico's most prominent artists, including former attendees Luis Jimenez and Robert Parke Harrison.

The book begins by tracing the growth and development of monetary systems, from the ancient civilisations of Mesopotamia and Egypt to the establishment of coinage in the Greek and Roman world. The following chapters develop a broader world view, exploring the monetary systems of Europe during the Middle Ages, the Islamic world, India and China. In the final part of the book the focus is on the processes by which money has become a global phenomenon, with chapters looking at the expanding role of money in early modern Europe and the Americas and the introduction of paper money and banking, the effect of European contacts on the local payment systems of Africa and Oceania, and concluding with an examination of the increasing impact of economic thought on monetary affairs.
Jubilant Thicket

Jubilant Thicket

Jonathan Williams

Copper Canyon Press

Jonathan Williams founded The Jargon Society--a publisher dedicated to poetry, experimental fiction, photography and visionary folk art--and has championed the underdog, maverick and outsider in the arts for 50 years. He has also published over 100 of his own books, pamphlets and broadsides of poetry, essays and photography. Jubilant Thicket collects the best of his poetry and teems with the eccentric, strange and boundlessly authentic--neoclassical poems, social satire, musical suites and lyrics. There is spleen, salt and a delicious -sarcasm, as Williams finds inspiration in Mahler and Mojo Nixon, Blake and whimmydiddles. There is nobody quite like Jonathan Williams: "He is one of the few poets about whom it could be said, he has never bored a reader."--Contemporary Poets"Of all the Black Mountain poets (teachers and disciples alike), Jonathan Williams is the wittiest, the least constrained, the most joyous."--The New York Times"Jonathan Williams is himself a kind of polytechnic -institute, trained to write poems as spare, functional and alive as a blade of grass."--Guy Davenport, from The Geography of the Imagination"Indispensable . . . We need him more than we know."--R. Buckminster FullerOf the thousands of essays and reviews published about his work, Williams writes, "The best thing yet said about me came from an undergraduate at the University of Chicago. His letter ended: 'Thanks for writing all those kick-ass books.'"Jonathan Williams's most recent book is A Palpable Elysium: Portraits of Genius and Solitude (Godine). He founded The Jargon Society in 1951, a publisher that, according to The New York Times, "has come to occupy a special place in the cultural life as patron of the American imagination." He lives on Skywinding Farm in rural North Carolina.
GIS Processing of Geocoded Satellite Data

GIS Processing of Geocoded Satellite Data

Springer-Verlag Berlin and Heidelberg GmbH Co. K
2001
sidottu
The book opens with the basic techniques of satellite geocoding (including the use of GPS and mosaic production) before describing a wide range of algorithms for extraction of information from optical and radar satellite images. The text then moves on to address the derivation of topographic information from space (including the recent Shuttle Topographic Radar Mission) followed by an explanation of the added-value obtained through the integrated use of geocoded satellite data in a Geographic Information System (GIS). Practical commercial and scientific applications are described in detail - first looking at land applications such as agriculture and civil engineering and then at the oceanographic, atmospheric and cryospheric worlds. Jonathan Williams reviews recent developments in 'environmental monitoring and global security' such as hazard and disaster monitoring, population dynamics and space missions dedicated to environmental monitoring (such as the Earth Observing System and theEuropean ENVISAT Mission). Finally, the author draws together all the threads under the generic term of geomatics - addressing cutting-edge developments such as Very High Resolution Imagery (VHR) and the role that satellite data may play in the development of Location Based Services for the third-generation telecom market.

Blues and Roots/Rue and Bluets

Blues and Roots/Rue and Bluets

Jonathan Williams

Duke University Press

Jonathan Williams’s poetry has been described as brilliant, sensuous, lyrical, quirky, suave, vital, joyful, sardonic, melodious, passionate, alive, pyrotechnic. This new, much enlarged edition of Blues and Roots displays all of the above. Williams has tramped the Appalachian Trail for decades, botanizing, jotting down specimens of authentic American speech, graffiti, superstitions, and nostrums-always curious, alert, and affectionately attentive. Blues and Roots focuses on the linguistic horizon of Appalachia in lyrics of wonder and light, of wit and comic incongruity, in found poems of the speech of his mountain neighbors. Publishers Weekly said of the earlier edition, “One of the most beautiful and evocative tributes to the Appalachians and its people yet published.” Blues and Roots is a fine celebration; Wiliams is a joyful ringmaster.
