This book presents conclusions from the first phase of a collaborative research programme on the potential role of small and intermediate urban centres in the development process. It draws on discussions and work undertaken with the United Nations Centre for Human Settlements in Nairobi, Kenya.

This book is the result of contributions, help and support from numerous people and several agencies.
