The book describes humanism in a systematic and historical perspective. It analyzes its manifestation and function in cultural studies and its role in the present. Within the book, special attention is given to the intention of contemporary humanism to overcome ethno-centric elements in the cultural orientation of contemporary living conditions and to develop humane dimensions of this orientation. This is linked to a fundamental critique of the current post-human self-understanding of the humanities. Furthermore, the intercultural aspect in the understanding of humanism is emphasized; for non-Western cultures also have their own humanistic traditions. Two further aspects are also addressed: the Holocaust as the most radical challenge to humanistic thinking and the relationship of humanism to nature. Wie sich dieser Sinnbildungsprozess in den verschiedenen Lebensbereichen gestaltet, steht im Blickfeld der vorliegenden Betrachtungen. Den Anfang macht das historische Denken in seinen unterschiedlichen Ausprägungen. Über die Frage der Aneignung geschichtsphilosophischer Traditionen gelangt der Autor zur Erinnerungskultur der Bundesrepublik und deren Reflektionen in der Geschichtswissenschaft sowie der Geschichtsdidaktik. Dazu wird ein umfassender typologischer Deutungsversuch vorgelegt. Zuletzt erweitert sich der Horizont um andere Bereiche der Kultur, wie Religion und Utopie, und deren sinnstiftendes Potential. So entsteht ein weites und differenziertes Spektrum der geistigen Vorgänge, in denen der Mensch über sich selbst und seine Umwelt verstehend und deutend reflektiert.

Mit Beitragen von Wilfried Barner, Jutta Limbach, Ernst Gottfried Mahrenholz, Jorn Rusen, Ernst Tugendhat und ErnstPeter Wieckenberg versammelt das Heft die Vortrage, die aus Anlass des 275. Geburtstages von Gotthold Ephraim Lessing in der Augusteerhalle der Herzog August Bibliothek Aufklarung im 21. Jahrhundert zum Gegenstand nahmen. Es wurde ein "Gesprach in Stationen" daraus, das angesichts der fortdauernden Bedeutung religioser Sinnstiftung fur die Kulturen der Menschheit gerade die Frage nach dem Verhaltnis von Vernunft und Religion einerseits und nach subjektiver Wahrheitsgewissheit und objektivem Geltungsanspruch andererseits thematisiert. Dabei konnte und musste immer wieder an den Positionen Lessings angeknupft werden, auf die auch im internationalen Wissenschaftsdiskurs Bezug genommen wird.
