"I saw on that ivory face the expression of sombre pride, of ruthless power, of craven terror--of an intense and hopeless despair. Did he live his life again in every detail of desire, temptation, and surrender during that supreme moment of complete knowledge? He cried in a whisper at some image, at some vision--he cried out twice, a cry that was no more than a breath: The horror The horror " Heart of Darkness (1899) by Polish-British writer Joseph Conrad tells a brilliant tale of Charles Marlow's experience in the heart of Africa. Marlow narrates the tale of his voyage up the Congo River and his encounter with Mr. Kurtz, the commander of a trading post of ivory in Africa, to his fellow sailors. An inspiring and stimulating story exposing the hypocrisy of the project of colonization, this book holds a mirror to the darkness inside each one of us.

HarperCollins is proud to present its range of best-loved, essential classics. ‘The reaches opened before us and closed behind, as if the forest had stepped leisurely across the water to bar the way for our return. We penetrated deeper and deeper into the heart of darkness.’ At the peak of European Imperialism, steamboat captain Charles Marlow travels deep into the African Congo on his way to relieve the elusive Mr Kurtz, an ivory trader renowned for his fearsome reputation. On his journey into the unknown Marlow takes a terrifying trip into his own subconscious, overwhelmed by his menacing, perilous and horrifying surroundings. The landscape and the people he meets force him to reflect on human nature and society, and in turn Conrad writes revealingly about the dangers of imperialism.

As the river pulls him deeper into the wild, Marlow begins to question not only Kurtz's fate but the very nature of civilization itself. With every mile, the thin veneer of order unravels, revealing a terrifying darkness lurking beneath. Heart of Darkness stands as a pivotal work in literature, shedding light on the brutal realities of European colonialism in Africa. Cuentos de Joseph Conrad / Short Stories of Joseph Conrad
ENGLISH DESCRIPTIONJoseph Conrad, One of the Greatest Figures in World Literature100th Anniversary of the Author's DeathJoseph Conrad (Berdichev, Ukraine, 1857 - Canterbury, England, 1924) left his seafaring life at thirty-seven after twenty years in the merchant navy. He settled in England and began writing in English (his third language after Polish and French). This selection of stories includes some of his most valuable pieces. "An Outpost of Progress" and "The Lagoon," written in 1896, belong to his early period. In the former, Conrad offers a hilarious--and tragic--portrait of the Belgian colonial enterprise, which he expanded two years later in Heart of Darkness. "The Lagoon" is set in Borneo and masterfully recreates the physical and moral landscape of life in the tropics. "Il Conde" (1906), set in Naples, emerged from his encounter with an old Polish aristocrat and explores the complex theme of the lies we tell ourselves for the sake of respectability. And "The Tale" (1916), inspired by the author's experiences during World War I, offers a moral reflection that makes this story one of the deepest ever written about the limits of individual responsibility in the midst of war.
