Der franz sische Erfinder Thomas Roch hat einen neuartigen Sprengstoff von riesiger Zerst rungskraft entwickelt, den er diversen Staaten vergeblich zum Kauf angeboten hat. Zerbrochen an dieser Entwicklung wird er in dem Nervensanatorium Healthful House in North Carolina untergebracht. Hier wird er durch den unter einer falschen Identit t arbeitenden, ebenfalls franz sischen Ingenieur Simon Hart gepflegt. Da es sich um ein Vorzeigesanatorium handelt, wird es immer wieder von interessierten Personen besucht, so auch durch einen Grafen d'Artigas. Dieser nutzt den Besuch jedoch, um zusammen mit seinen Gehilfen die Entf hrung des Erfinders und seines Pflegers durchzuf hren. Im weiteren Verlauf der Handlung werden die Entwicklungen aus der Sicht des Simon Hart wiedergegeben. Dieser hat zun chst f r sich das R tsel zu l sen, wie die Go lette des Grafen trotz nicht gesetzter Segel und nicht vorhandenem Motor bewegt wird. Die L sung wird ihm erst am Ziel der Reise, der Insel Back Cup auf den Bermudas, klar, als er mit einem U-Boot in das Innere dieser Insel gebracht wird. Jules Verne (1828-1905) war ein franz sischer Schriftsteller.

A Floating City, enjoyed a popularity almost equal to that of Round the World in Eighty Days. It was the direct result of the trip which the author actually made to America in 1867, on the largest iron ship ever built. He gives us a faithful picture of the natural and usual incidents of an ocean voyage of those days, enlivening these by introducing a romance aboard ship. The pictures of the "Great Eastern," are of course exaggerated, not so much in words themselves as in the impressions they convey. But the pictures of New York and of Niagara are the genuine imprint made upon the great writer by his visit.
