Julien Offray de La Mettrie (1709-1751) war ein franz sischer Arzt und Philosoph. Bekanntheit erlangte er vor allem durch sein konsequent materialistisches Menschenbild, weswegen er seinen Zeitgenossen als enfant terrible der Aufkl rung galt. Der Aufkl rer La Mettrie ist insbesondere durch seine Schrift mit dem eing ngigen Titel L'homme machine (1748; dt.: Der Mensch als Maschine) in die Geschichte der Philosophie eingegangen. Sein Discours sur le bonheur oder Anti-S n que (1748), den er selbst als sein Hauptwerk ansah, wurde hingegen von den Zeitgenossen geschm ht und sp ter kaum noch beachtet. Ausgehend von Ren Descartes entwickelte La Mettrie einen streng erfahrungsorientierten Materialismus, der jegliche metaphysische Vorannahmen oder Schlussfolgerungen verneint. So bestimmt er die Seele - einen zentralen Streitgegenstand der Fr haufkl rung - als Resultat komplexer K rperfunktionen, die folgerichtig nicht nur durch deren individuelle Wandlungen (z. B. durch k rperliche Funktionsst rungen oder durch Lernen) beeinflussbar ist, sondern somit auch als Ergebnis einer biologischen Entwicklung erscheint.
