Das Buch bietet zunächst mit einer synchronen linguistischen Analyse einen Einblick in den Wortbestand der heutigen Tennissprache. Der Schwerpunkt liegt dabei auf den Kategorien Tennisfachsprache, Tennisjargon und Tennisreportsprache sowie auf der Wortbildung nach etymologischer, morphologischer und semantischer Motivation. Auf Basis eines Korpus aus Zeitschriften, Zeitungen, Fach- und Lehrbüchern zeichnet der Band sodann mit einer diachronen Analyse die Herausbildung der – anfangs auf dem Englischen beruhenden – Tennislexik sowie deren Entwicklung nach. Dies deckt in vier Zeitabschnitten den Zeitraum vom Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts bis in die 1950er Jahre ab. Schließlich wird – unter besonderer Berücksichtigung der Lexik – die Darstellung des Tennis in Werken von Schriftstellern wie Robert Musil, Erich Kästner und Günter Grass behandelt.
