String-Net Construction of RCFT Correlators

String-Net Construction of RCFT Correlators

Springer International Publishing AG

This book studies using string-net models to accomplish a direct, purely two-dimensional, approach to correlators of two-dimensional rational conformal field theories. The authors obtain concise geometric expressions for the objects describing bulk and boundary fields in terms of idempotents in the cylinder category of the underlying modular fusion category, comprising more general classes of fields than is standard in the literature. Combining these idempotents with Frobenius graphs on the world sheet yields string nets that form a consistent system of correlators, i.e. a system of invariants under appropriate mapping class groups that are compatible with factorization. The authors extract operator products of field objects from specific correlators; the resulting operator products are natural algebraic expressions that make sense beyond semisimplicity. They also derive an Eckmann-Hilton relation internal to a braided category, thereby demonstrating the utility of string nets for understanding algebra in braided tensor categories. Finally, they introduce the notion of a universal correlator. This systematizes the treatment of situations in which different world sheets have the same correlator and allows for the definition of a more comprehensive mapping class group.

Topological quantum field theories lie at the intersection of algebra, topology, and quantum field theory. The area is highly active, driven by recent developments in representation theory and topology, as well as developments in theoretical physics, including the study of topological phases of matter and topological symmetries. This book provides an accessible introduction to topological quantum field theories, along with basic notions of category theory - the natural mathematical setting for topological field theories - by describing these theories as a symmetric monoidal functor from a cobordism category to the category of vector spaces. Using Dijkgraaf–Witten theories as a recurring example, the book introduces key tools such as category theory, Hopf algebras, and tensor categories, providing a solid foundation for students aiming to pursue a more advanced study in quantum topology and related areas. The book concludes with an outlook connecting the foundational theory to recent developments and current research directions. The text is intended for advanced undergraduates and beginning graduate students in mathematics and theoretical physics. It is largely self-contained and assumes no specific background beyond standard undergraduate algebra and topology. While some familiarity with basic ideas from quantum theory is helpful, it is not a prerequisite.

Oxidative Injury in Dermatopathology

Oxidative Injury in Dermatopathology

Dermatology is a complex and puzzling world of itching bumps, pim ples, and rashes. The multitude of clinically distinct skin diseases, their frequently unresolved pathogenesis, and the exponentially in creasing amount of scientific information add to the confusion about skin diseases. The great prevalence of skin diseases makes them an urgent priority for intensive research effort, and although many scientists and academic clinicians are vigorously trying to uncover we are only at the very brink of understanding the etiol their secrets, ogy of most dermatoses. The principle mechanisms of general organ pathology (physical, chemical, microbial, ischemic, degenerative, and neoplastic disturb ances) are believed to be relatively well understood. In contrast to skin pathomorphology, however little is known regarding the bio chemistry and physiology of dermatoses. The difficulty in under standing skin diseases may be overcome partially by finding biome dical simplifications, and the concept of "oxidative injury in dermatopathology" is just such a simplification. It should, of course, always be kept in mind that no single mechanism alone can explain the pathogenesis of a disease and that there may be a danger of over looking other important biological determinants.

Symmetries, Lie Algebras and Representations

Symmetries, Lie Algebras and Representations

Jürgen Fuchs; Christoph Schweigert

Cambridge University Press
2003
pokkari
This is an introduction to Lie algebras and their applications in physics. The first three chapters show how Lie algebras arise naturally from symmetries of physical systems and illustrate through examples much of their general structure. Chapters 4 to 13 give a detailed introduction to Lie algebras and their representations, covering the Cartan-Weyl basis, simple and affine Lie algebras, real forms and Lie groups, the Weyl group, automorphisms, loop algebras and highest weight representations. Chapters 14 to 22 cover specific further topics, such as Verma modules, Casimirs, tensor products and Clebsch-Gordan coefficients, invariant tensors, subalgebras and branching rules, Young tableaux, spinors, Clifford algebras and supersymmetry, representations on function spaces, and Hopf algebras and representation rings. A detailed reference list is provided, and many exercises and examples throughout the book illustrate the use of Lie algebras in real physical problems. The text is written at a level accessible to graduate students, but will also provide a comprehensive reference for researchers.

Environmental Stressors in Health and Disease
This volume illustrates the impact of environmental oxidants on the tissues of the eyes, lungs and skin, as well as on the immune system - highlighting common illnesses, injuries and pathologies induced by pro-oxidant environmental xenobiotics such as inflammation, immune response, signal transduction, regulation of gene expression, and carcinogenesis. It provides clinical presentations and discusses the effects of environmental oxidants on target organs.
