The life and times of Pieter Bruegel the Elder (c. 1526/30–1569) were marked by stark cultural conflict. He witnessed religious wars, the Duke of Alba’s brutal rule as governor of the Netherlands, and the palpable effects of the Inquisition. To this day, the Flemish artist remains shrouded in mystery. We know neither where nor exactly when he was born. But while early scholarship emphasized the vernacular character of his painting and graphic work, modern research has attached greater importance to its humanistic content. Starting out as a print designer for publisher Hieronymus Cock, Bruegel produced numerous print series that were distributed throughout Europe. These depicted vices and virtues alongside jolly peasant festivals and sweeping landscape panoramas. He would eventually increasingly turn to painting, working for the cultural elite of Antwerp and Brussels. This monograph is a testament to Bruegel’s evolution as an artist, one who bravely confronted the issues of his day all the while proposing new inventions and solutions. Rather than idealizing reality, he addressed the horrors of religious warfare and took a critical stand against the institution of the Church. To this end, he developed his own pictorial language of dissidence, lacing innocuous everyday scenes with subliminal statements in order to escape repercussions. To this end, a super-ordinate system called "Discovery Service" is designed that has to handle large amounts of data, high insert-rates, and a high number of queries that are submitted to the discovery service. An example that is used throughout this book is the European pharmaceutical supply chain, which faces the challenge that more and more counterfeit medicinal products are being introduced. Between October and December 2008, more than 34 million fake drug pills were detected at customs control at the borders of the European Union. These fake drugs can put lives in danger as they were supposed to fight cancer, take effect as painkiller or antibiotics, among others. The concepts described in this book can be adopted for supply chain management use cases other than track and trace, such as recall, supply chain optimization, or supply chain analytics.

Im Fokus der Studie steht eine neue Deutung von Rembrandts Nachtwache aus dem Jahre 1642. Zentral ist dabei die Auseinandersetzung des Malers mit der klassizistischen Kunsttheorie von Franciscus Junius. Dessen Werk "De pictura veterum" war 1637 in lateinischer und 1641 in niederländischer Sprache erschienen. So lautet die These, dass Rembrandts Gruppenporträt auf eine Kritik italienisch-klassizistischer Imitatio-Konzepte zielt und zugleich Werke der Antike und der italienischen Hochrenaissance ironisiert. Der Leidener Maler orientiert sich an Raffaels Schule von Athen, um damit implizit die Frage angemessener und unangemessener Nachahmung zu stellen. Die Studie insgesamt will zeigen, wie differenziert Rembrandt mit Vorbildern umzugehen vermag. Steht auch die Nachtwache im Zentrum der Untersuchung, so werden auch andere Gemälde sowie Radierungen und Zeichnungen interpretiert und nach der ironischen Dimension von Rembrandts Kunst im Ganzen gefragt. The focus of Müller’s study is a new interpretation of Rembrandt’s Night Watch from 1642, which highlights the painter’s engagement with the classical art theory of Franciscus Junius. Junius’s treatise, "De pictura veterum", was published in Latin in 1637 and in Dutch in 1641. Ultimately, Müller argues that Rembrandt’s group portrait was designed to present a critique of the Italianate/classical concepts of Imitatio in addition to offering an ironic commentary on artworks of the Antique and High Renaissance periods. The Dutch artist takes Raphael’s School of Athens as a reference point, thereby implicitly posing questions about appropriate and inappropriate forms of imitation. The study as a whole shows how complex and witty Rembrandt’s approach to his models could be. The fourth edition of this textbook has been thoroughly revised in order to reflect the central role which geodesy has achieved in the past ten years. The Global Geodetic Observing System established by the IAG utilizes a variety of techniques to determine the geometric shape of the earth and its kinematics, the variations of earth rotation, and the earth’s gravity field. Space techniques play a fundamental role, with recent space missions also including gravity field recovery. Terrestrial techniques are important for regional and local applications, and for validating the results of the space missions. Global and regional reference systems are now well established and widely used. They also serve as a basis for geo-information systems. The analysis of the time variation of the geodetic products provides the link to other geosciences and contributes to proper modelling of geodynamic processes. The book follows the principal directions of geodesy, providing the theoretical background as well as the principles of measurement and evaluation methods.
