La conoscenza della biologia strutturale, molecolare e funzionale dell'osso essenziale per una migliore comprensione di questo tessuto come unit multicellulare e struttura dinamica che pu agire anche come tessuto endocrino, una funzione ancora poco compresa. Studi in vitro e in vivo hanno dimostrato che le cellule ossee rispondono a diversi fattori e molecole, contribuendo a una migliore comprensione della plasticit delle cellule ossee. Inoltre, le interazioni tra le cellule ossee dipendenti dalle integrine della matrice ossea sono importanti per la formazione e il riassorbimento dell'osso. Gli studi hanno affrontato l'importanza del sistema lacunare-canalicolare e del fluido pericellulare, attraverso il quale gli osteociti agiscono come meccanosensori, per l'adattamento dell'osso alle forze meccaniche. Ormoni, citochine e fattori che regolano l'attivit delle cellule ossee svolgono un ruolo significativo nell'istofisiologia dell'osso in condizioni normali e patologiche. Pertanto, una comprensione pi approfondita della natura dinamica del tessuto osseo aiuter sicuramente a gestire nuovi approcci terapeutici per le malattie dell'osso e in vari trattamenti ortodontici.
