These three essays were inspired by the Samothracian discoveries. Cyriacus of Ancona's visit to the island and his assessment of what he saw are the subject of the opening essay. This is followed by the first detailed and comprehensive analysis of Mantegna's Parnassus, a painting which Mrs. Lehmann suggests reflects in its theme and imagery the use of a limited number of ancient sculptures and texts. The final essay is a discussion of the postclassical transformation of the iconographic type of the ancient ship-fountain. Originally published in 1973. Franz-Xaver Kaufmann: Zur Aktualitat von Gaudium et spes. Karl Kardinal Lehmann: Das Konzil und seine Wirkungsgeschichte. Franz-Josef Overbeck: Zum Pluralismus in Gesellschaft und Kirche Gaudium et spes, das Abschlussdokument des Zweiten Vatikanischen Konzils (1962-1965), bedeutet einen theologischen Quantensprung (Bischof Dr. Franz-Josef Overbeck). Es hat den fruheren Gegensatz von Kirche und Welt uberwunden: Die Welt ist Gottes gute Schopfung. Christinnen und Christen sollen sich nicht aus der Welt zuruckziehen, sondern sie mitgestalten. Diese neue Verhaltnisbestimmung hatte und hat weitreichende Auswirkungen auch auf das Selbstverstandnis und die Strukturen der Kirche. Der Lernprozess ist langst nicht abgeschlossen, scheint aber Erfrischung zu brauchen. Pointiert zeigt dieser Band den bleibenden Impuls des Konzils fur eine Erneuerung des kirchlichen Lebens in der heutigen Gesellschaft auf.

Schneller denn je wandelt sich die Zeit. Was gestern noch sicher galt, ist heute schon in Frage gestellt. Auch vor der Kirche macht dieser Wandel nicht halt. Als Bischof von Mainz hat Kardinal Lehmann solche Herausforderungen stets wach in den Blick genommen. Seine Hirtenworte spiegeln die aktuellen Um- und Aufbruche. Toleranz ist das Gegenteil von Gleichgultigkeit. Toleranz heisst, jemanden zu respektieren, obwohl man seine Auffassungen nicht teilt. Toleranz, zumal wenn es um Religion geht, musste und muss gegen viele Widerstande errungen werden und ist bis heute nicht uberall selbstverstandlich. Karl Lehmann zeichnet diesen Weg nach, gerade auch innerhalb der Kirche, und umreisst eine heute tragfahige Auffassung von Toleranz. Ein pointierter Beitrag zu einer notwendigen Debatte im Nachdenken daruber, in welcher Gesellschaft wir leben wollen.
