Marx's Concept of Man

Marx's Concept of Man

In publishing Marx’s Concept of Man in 1961, Erich Fromm presented to the English-speaking world for the first time Karl Marx’s then recently discovered Economic and Philosophical Manuscripts. Including the Manuscripts and many other philosophical writings by Marx as well as Fromm’s own extended response, many of these writings have since become recognised as important works in their own right. Fromm stresses Marx’s humanist philosophy and challenges both contemporary Western ignorance of Marx and Soviet corruptions of his work. Fromm’s analysis of Marx’s work and his dissemination of these neglected writings by Marx himself fundamentally altered the prevailing discourse about Marxism, revolutionising contemporary thought and providing a formative influence for the development of the New Left.

The book ""Literature and Art"" by Karl Marx is a collection of his writings on the relationship between literature, art, and society. In this book, Marx explores how literature and art are influenced by the economic and social conditions of their time. He argues that art and literature are not created in a vacuum, but are shaped by the material conditions of society. Marx examines the role of literature and art in shaping public opinion and the ways in which they can be used to promote revolutionary change. He also discusses the relationship between art and ideology, arguing that art can be used to challenge dominant ideologies and promote alternative ways of thinking. The book includes a range of Marx's writings on literature and art, including his famous essay ""The Communist Manifesto"" and his analysis of Shakespeare's plays. It also includes his thoughts on the relationship between literature and religion, the role of art in the struggle for social change, and the importance of culture in the development of a socialist society. Overall, ""Literature and Art"" is a thought-provoking and insightful exploration of the relationship between art, literature, and society, written by one of the most influential thinkers of the 19th century. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world's literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions, that are true to their original work.

Few writers have had a more demonstrable impact on the development of the modern world than has Karl Marx (1818-1883). Born in Trier into a middle-class Jewish family in 1818, by the time of his death in London in 1883, Marx claimed a growing international reputation. Of central importance then and later was his book Das Kapital, or, as it is known to English readers, simply Capital. Volume One of Capital was published in Paris in 1867. This was the only volume published during Marx’s lifetime and the only to have come directly from his pen. Volume Two, published in 1884, was based on notes Marx left, but written by his friend and collaborator, Friedrich Engels (1820-1895). Readers from the nineteenth century to the present have been captivated by the unmistakable power and urgency of this classic of world literature. Marx’s critique of the capitalist system is rife with big themes: his theory of ‘surplus value’, his discussion of the exploitation of the working class, and his forecast of class conflict on a grand scale. Marx wrote with purpose. As he famously put it, ‘Philosophers have previously tried to explain the world, our task is to change it.’
