The Old Peabody Pew is written by Kate Douglas Wiggin. The story begins with the Dorcas Society, being female and possessed of notions regarding comfort and beauty, generally disapproved of making any impious alterations in a tabernacle, chapel, temple, or other building used for worship. This sentiment had been maintained for a quarter of a century but was especially strong in the old Tory Hill Meeting House. Every pew in the old Meeting House was scrubbed by members of the Ladies' Christian Temperance Society. "When men lose their wives, they lose their wits," said the Widow Buzzell. "If there's anything duller than cookin' three meals a day for yourself, and eatin' them by yourself, I'd like to know it ". A bird without a song stood in for Nancy Peabody's love each year. Since that gloomy day in November when Justin said goodbye, the months had seemingly never ended. If she had openly pledged to him, she could have waited twice ten years.

A Summer in a Cañon & Polly Oliver's Problem (Children's Book Classics) - Illustrated
A Summer in a Ca on is a remarkable story of a late 19th-century California life from the point of view of a group of teens and children on the summertime adventure of their lives. The book is following lives of Polly Oliver and her friends and cousins a year or so before she takes off for San Francisco to earn a living and save her mother from destitution. It is a fun chronicle of a summer vacation, during which Polly writes some very clever and humorous letters home, to an invalid cousin in Santa Barbara, where she describes things such as a tarantula fight and donkey riding. Polly Oliver's Problem continues to follow Polly after she comes back from holyday and starts working on her life dream, which is becoming a kindergarten teacher. But her mother, who runs a boarding house, gets ill and Polly must take responsibility. When the doctor suggests a change of climate, Polly moves the family to San Francisco where she keeps trying to fulfill the dream with her mother's blessing. Classic Starts(r): Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm Volume 46
Eleven-year-old Rebecca Randall is quite a handful--and now she's leaving her beloved Sunnybrook Farm to live with her well-to-do elderly aunts and get an education. But they were expecting Rebecca's quiet, hard-working older sister instead. Can the bright-eyed and talkative girl win them over...especially her strict, rule-bound Aunt Miranda? Just as Rebecca's "grand spirit" charms everyone in the story, it will captivate readers, too.
