Examines interventions in the healthcare system that use Electronic Medical Record Systems (EMR-S) to affect patient trajectories - i.e., the sequence of encounters a patient has with the healthcare system - by improving health and thereby reducing healthcare utilization, or by reducing a costly form of utilization (e.g., inpatient stays) and increasing a more economical form (e.g., office visits to physicians, or prescription medications).

This book estimates the current level and pattern of Healthcare Information Technology adoption in different types of healthcare organizations, and evaluates factors that affect this diffusion process. It also helps focus the policy agenda for incentives to speed Healthcare Information Technology (HIT) adoption by estimating the current level and pattern of HIT adoption in the different types of healthcare organizations, according to information the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS)-Dorenfest database, and evaluates factors that affect this diffusion process, using existing empirical studies and regression analysis.

This study was part of an effort to identify state-level factors that may contribute to efficent energy use nationwide. The authors examined changes in energy intensity in 48 US states and in the states' energy-consuming sectors from 1977 through 1999.
