The team of experienced and expert authors collectively examine how English is shaped by policy, institutions and the social relations of the classroom. Contemporary culture frequently defines freedom the way the Bible describes sin: complete autonomy. A Quid without Any Quo explores how the gospel sets us free for glad and joyful service. Not only is Paul's Letter to the Galatians perhaps the most consequential book of the New Testament for the Protestant Reformation, its radical and unyielding proclamation of grace apart from the law is once again timely in a culture that is often without mercy. In these reflections on Paul's explosive epistle, Jason Micheli shows how Protestants generally, but preachers especially, can recover a confident articulation of their original message. In addition, A Quid without Any Quo tackles challenging and relevant questions such as the nature of the Old Testament law, the relationship between works and faith, the meaning of justification by faith, how the gospel relates to issues of race, the character of Christian community, and the reality of the hope found in Jesus Christ.

The poems are full of compactness and a force of inspired imagination that provides a charming beauty to this poetry collection. The style of the poems is quite vivid and concrete.

The impression stays with us that these poems of feeling and vision will attract all readers. In places the poet displays the sublime beauty of intense imagination.

This book contains archival material from the 1980s Austin Alternative Music scene, as seen though the lens of one band: Austin's Peace Corpse (later Corps) and their lead singer/ lyricist PoetKen Jones. In these pages you'll find a treasure trove of lyrics, flyers, photos, tape covers, press clippings and more that document what made the Austin scene of that era a breeding ground for future world renown acts ranging from as the Butthole Surfers to Daniel Johnston, and serves as a history lesson about Austin, the music business, poetry and life itself.

This isn't a very long book, because it's about life. And everyone knows ... life is short. God, of course, is not 'short.' He is eternal. And He is very wise. When He decided it was time for "time" to begin, He divided life into bite sized pieces--seconds and minutes, moments for livingAnd He strung them together in a line. When the line was sixty minutes long, He tied a knot and said, "Enough. Sixty minutes are long enough for every hour." And He began to measure again. Another sixty minutes; another hour; another knot. Twenty- four times God measured, and tied; and there was evening, and there was morning, before He stopped and called it a day. The Infinite Creator has set into motion a parade of days, each one filled with unexpected, unannounced events. Some days are filled with so much happiness and delight that we hope they will never end. But they do. Other days contain so much sorrow and brokenness that we think they will never end. But they do. Life passes through our hands, a day at a time. And God sees and knows each and every moment of it all. Job had an interesting question about that reality, in the Bible, when he asked, "Since times are not hidden from the Almighty, why do those who know Him see not His days?" (Job 21:1)Good question. And so, a short little book about days. This is a book about making sense of those few, short days God has granted every living soul: Someday ... for dreaming. Any Day, for waiting. Every Day, for living. Yesterday, for remembering. Today, for now. Tomorrow, for sure? A Day of Rest, forever.

Life Expectancy is Ken Jones' seventh book. It brings to light poems written in the 80's while Jones was studying at University of Texas.

An astonishing true story of mountaineering survivalOn 5 January 2003, former Special Forces soldier Ken Jones was caught in a devastating avalanche as he climbed in the frozen wilderness of Romania's Transylvanian Alps. Flung from a cliff, he regained consciousness to find himself shrouded in darkness, separated from his supplies, suffering from overexposure in the sub zero-temperatures and in horrendous pain from a broken leg and shattered pelvis. Heavily frostbitten and bleeding internally, Ken dragged himself to safety over three agonizing days only to discover that his true ordeal had yet to begin. His account of life saving surgery and his battle to walk again is a classic tale of triumph over adversity and what it means to never give up. Heart stopping and inspiring to the very last page, Ken Jones's story of endurance and survival is an unforgettable testament to the strength of the human spirit.

Written by two World War II veterans who later became well-known war correspondents, this biography records the inspiring life of one of America's great naval heroes. Popularly referred to as "31-Knot" Burke, Admiral Arleigh Burke fought savage battles at sea and won every decoration a grateful nation could bestow, yet his service to his country was not in combat alone. This book is at once a stirring testament to Burke's World War II record as a combat leader and to his talents as a diplomat at the armistice table in Korea and as a politician in Washington. It details his legendary victories with DESRON 23 in the Pacific and his development of high-speed night tactics for destroyers that resulted in what many call the perfect naval engagement at the Battle of Cape St. George. Burke's most enduring contributions occurred during his unprecedented three terms as chief of naval operations when he directed the Navy's technical development during its revolutionary change from steam and gunpowder to nuclear concepts in ships, weaponry, strategy, and tactics. Published soon after Burke's retirement from the Navy in 1961, the book has remained a standard reference for four decades.

This book makes a significant contribution to a hitherto much neglected area. The book brings together a wide range of papers on a scale rarely seen with a geographic spread that enhances our understanding of the complex journey undertaken by those who aspire to become teachers of teachers. The authors, from more than ten countries, use a variety of approaches including narrative/life history, self-study and empirical research to demonstrate the complexity of the transformative search by individuals to establish their professional identity as teacher educators. The book offers fundamental and thoughtful critiques of current policy, practice and examples of established structures specifically supporting the professional development of teacher educators that may well have a wider applicability. Many of the authors are active and leading persons in the international fields of teacher education and of professional development. The book considers:novice teacher educators, issues of transition;identity development including research identity;the facilitation and mentoring of teacher educators;self-study research including collaborative writing, use of stories;professional development within the context of curriculum and structural reform. Becoming a teacher is recognised as a transformative search by individuals for their teaching identities. Becoming a teacher educator often involves a more complex and longer journey but, according to the many travel stories told here, one that can be a deeply satisfying experience. This book was published as a special issue of Professional Development in Education.
