Elgar Advanced Introductions are stimulating and thoughtful introductions to major fields in the social sciences, business and law, expertly written by the world’s leading scholars. Designed to be accessible yet rigorous, they offer concise and lucid surveys of the substantive and policy issues associated with discrete subject areas. In this timely book, Kenneth Newton showcases classical and modern theories of political trust, expertly examining it in the wider context of diverse national, social, economic and political conditions. Newton investigates cutting-edge current research and pathways for future research in the field, presenting empirical studies highlighting political trust’s importance, variations, origins and consequences. He demonstrates that political trust is a useful and highly important symptom, but not a cause, of political conditions. Through exploration of the relationship between political trust and democracy, Newton illustrates that functions often attributed to political trust alone may be carried out by non-political institutions and practices instead. Key Features:Global comparative case studiesComparison of high and low trust nationsIn depth examination of relationship between political trust and democracyThe Advanced Introduction to Political Trust is of practical interest to academics and researchers of political science, international relations, regulation and governance, as well as public policy and management.

What role does the media play in British politics? There is growing concern that the media environment is biased, and that online news and social media spread fake news, conspiracy theories, propaganda, and foreign interference. Examining TV, radio, newspapers and the internet, Kenneth Newton unravels the real effects of the mainstream and alternative news media. With abundant evidence, Newton demonstrates that, contrary to popular belief: newspapers neither win nor lose elections; nor set election agendas; most citizens have a fairly mixed news diet and do not inhabit echo-chambers; social media influences on political attitudes are generally small and actually expand the range of news people get; impartial and reliable public service news still provides the bulk of the nation's news diet. Evidence shows that the main media effects on political attitudes and behaviour are positive and inform and mobilise citizens rather than influencing their voting choice.

Political Data Handbook

Political Data Handbook

This fully revised and updated edition of an established reference book, provides in one volume the most comprehensive and detailed statistical guide available to the government and politics of the twenty-four countries in the OECD. There is no lack of statistical data about the OECD countries (the nineteen countries of Western Europe together with Cabada, the United States, Japan, Australia, and New Sealand); but much of the material is hard to track down and little is available in comparative form. The editors of the present volume have sifted through many hundreds of sources to select the essential facts and figures on population, social structure, employment, the economy, public finance, government structures, and political parties from 1950 to the present day. In addition they provide social and economic background for each of the countries covered to enable the data to be put in context. A short final section lists sources of further information. The resulting combination is both invaluable and fascinating, whether it is used casually to check up a fact or two, or systematically to make detailed comparisons between the most advanced political systems of the Western world.

This overiew volume pulls together the empirical findings of the Beliefs in Government series and sets them in the broad context of mass politics in modern Europe. Its conclusions about political participation, mass political opinion, postmaterialism and postmodernism, and democratic change and stability break new ground in political science. Series description This set of five volumes is an exhaustive study of beliefs in government in post-war Europe. Based upon an extensive collection of survey evidence, the results challenge widely argued theories of mass opinion, and much scholarly writing about citizen attitudes towards government and politics. The series arises from a research project sponsored by the European Science Foundation. Series ISBN: 0-19-961880-1
