This textbook provides a comprehensive and well-structured introduction to the fundamentals, principles, and techniques of requirements engineering (RE). It presents approved techniques for eliciting, negotiating, and documenting as well as validating, and managing requirements for software-intensive systems. The various aspects of the process and the techniques are illustrated using numerous examples based on extensive teaching experience and industrial collaborations. The book is structured in five parts. Part I “Fundamentals and Framework” provides a comprehensive introduction to the fundamentals of RE, illustrates why it is a critical success factor for any software development project, and describes different ways of implementing it in an organization and its role in different software engineering process models. Part II “Requirements Engineering Context” explains the essential role and influence of the RE context on system requirements, defines basic terms, and introduces the concept of context perspectives to support context consideration. Part III “Core Activities” describes requirements elicitation, documentation, and negotiation and conflict resolution strategies. Part IV “Requirements Artefacts” explains the management of goals, scenarios, and solution-oriented requirements, including methodologies like i* and KAOS. Eventually, Part V “Cross-Sectional Activities” details four validation and three management activities. This second edition of Pohl’s widely used and trusted textbook provides a considerable number of updates, places a stronger focus on the consideration of the context, puts a stronger emphasis on conflict resolution, and includes new, expanded and revised techniques. The presentation aims at professionals, students, and lecturers in systems and software engineering or business applications development. Professionals such as project managers, software architects, systems analysts, and software engineers will benefit in their daily work from the didactically well-presented combination of validated procedures and industrial experience. Students and lecturers will appreciate the comprehensive description of sound fundamentals, principles, and techniques, which is completed by a huge, commented list of references for further reading. Lecturers will find additional teaching material on the book’s website, www.requirements-book.com.
Requirements engineering is the process of eliciting individual stakeholder requirements and needs and developing them into detailed, agreed requirements documented and specified in such a way that they can serve as the basis for all other system development activities. Requirements engineering tasks have become increasingly complex. In order to ensure a high level of knowledge and competency among requirements engineers, the International Requirements Engineering Board (IREB) developed a standardized qualification called the Certified Professional for Requirements Engineering (CPRE). The certification defines the practical skills of a requirements engineer on various training levels. This book is designed for self-study and covers the curriculum for the Certified Professional for Requirements Engineering Foundation Level exam as defined by the IREB. The 2nd edition has been thoroughly revised and is aligned with the curriculum Version 2.2 of the IREB. In addition, some minor corrections to the 1st edition have been included. About IREB: The mission of the IREB is to contribute to the standardization of further education in the fields of business analysis and requirements engineering by providing syllabi and examinations, thereby achieving a higher level of applied requirements engineering. The IRE Board is comprised of a balanced mix of independent, internationally recognized experts in the fields of economy, consulting, research, and science. The IREB is a non-profit corporation.
I. Software Product Line Engineering Are you interested in producing software products or software-intensive systems at lower costs, in shorter time, and with higher quality? If so, you are holding the right book in your hands. Software product line engineering has proven to be the methodology for Higher quality, lower developing a diversity of software products and software-intensive systems cost, and shorter at lower costs, in shorter time, and with higher quality. Numerous reports development times document the significant achievements and experience gained by introducing software product lines in the software industry. Chapter 21 of this book summarises several cases. Concerning the terminology, there is an almost synonymous use of the terms Software product line “software product family” and “software product line”. Whereas in Europe vs. software product the term software product family is used more often, in North America the family term software product line is used more frequently. This is, among other things, reflected in the names of the two former conference series (the so- ware product line conference series, started in 2000 in the USA, and the product family engineering (PFE) workshop series, started in 1996 in Europe) which were merged in 2004 to form the leading software product line conference (SPLC) series. In this book, we use the term software product line.

A raw and honest verbatim-theatre play about post-reunification Germany, commissioned in 1994 by Der Spiegel to test the mood of the new Germany. A vast range of people - from security guard to shepherd, from the East and from the West - come forward to give voice to their personal experiences and feelings since the Berlin wall came down. Klaus Pohl's play Waiting Room Germany was first staged in this English translation by David Tushingham at the Royal Court Theatre, London, in November 1995. It is published in the Nick Hern Books Instant Playscript series – designed to reflect the immediacy of the play on the stage. Printed only a few days before opening night, the aim is to give audiences at the theatre and readers all over the world instant access to the best of current new writing as it hits the stage.
