Boken finns även på engelska, The Double Self in the Religious Experience.

Hilma af Klint is now regarded as a pioneer of abstract art. Her work from the early 20th century predates the first purely abstract paintings by Kandinsky, Mondrian and Malevich. Now, for the first time, af Klint’s works, some 1,600 in all, have been collected in a Catalogue Raisonné. Af Klint’s work should be seen and appreciated in the series of paintings often depicting specific themes and this ground-breaking publication, divided into seven volumes, allows for this. Throughout her life af Klint used research-oriented methods trying to understand the spiritual contexts of the world. She investigated plants and other objects in their geometrical form. Nature was perfect; we humans just needed to look at it more closely. This concept is investigated in Volume V. Produced with the permission of the Hilma af Klint Foundation and featuring introductions by Daniel Birnbaum and Kurt Almqvist, a separate slip cased edition containing all seven volumes will be available in autumn 2021.

Hilma af Klint rarely exhibited her work during her lifetime, and her magnum opus, The Paintings for the Temple, was shown to the public in the series of exhibitions that started in 2013 at Moderna Museet in Stockholm and ended with the grand exhibition at the Guggenheim Museum in New York in 2018-19. This series of 193 paintings began with af Klint receiving communication from an otherworldly figure during a séance. Specific themes, such as evolution and duality, are conveyed through vivid pastel colour schemes and intricate geometric patterns arranged carefully on canvases that reach over ten feet in height. This volume, the third in the artist’s first seven-part catalogue raisonné, contains the sketches and preparatory work af Klint made in anticipation of The Paintings for the Temple. af Klint traveled with these sketchbooks so as to be able to show her friends her work in a more accessible format.

The drawings in this first volume of a new catalogue raisonné represent an intense ten-year period of Hilma af Klint’s (1862-1944) life that would lay the foundation for her later achievements. In 1896, af Klint and four other women formed 'The Five', a group steeped in the spiritualist beliefs permeating Europe at that time, including theosophy, Rosicrucianism and other strains of liberal religious thought. From 1896 to 1907, The Five engaged in a daily systematic method of spiritual experimentation. During séances, Hilma af Klint drew automatic spiritual sketches based on the messages that the medium (not always the same member) communicated from the spirits the group summoned. The elaborate system of symbols, geometry and biological imagery that characterise her work all find their origin during this period.

The 2018 exhibition at the Guggenheim Museum in New York, Hilma af Klint: Paintings for the Future, introduced the general public to the abstract mystical masterpieces of Swedish painter Hilma af Klint (1862–1944). Based on a seminar held at the Guggenheim Museum at the opening of this acclaimed exhibition, this volume compiles the insights of the seminar’s contributors alongside reproductions of works, archival photographs and images from af Klint’s journals. Hilma af Klint: Visionary explores the social and spiritual movements that appeared at the turn of the 20th century, inspiring the pioneers of modernism and abstract art: Kandinsky, Mondrian, Malevich and af Klint. What was the zeitgeist that inspired such an eruption in abstract art? What were the conditions that created Hilma af Klint? Academics and experts Julia Voss, Tracey Bashkoff, Isaac Lubelsky, Linda Dalrymple Henderson and Marco Pasi each take a different approach. Voss analyzes af Klint's biography, pinpointing five important events in her life; Bashkoff presents her connection to Hilla Rebay and her plans for the building of a temple; Lubelsky traces the origins of theosophy in New York; Henderson examines the occult and science; and Pasi considers esotericism’s changing role in culture.

The Sampans from Canton is a collection of 99 Chinese gouaches from the second half of the 18th century. In minute detail, they depict an entire community afloat on the water, with the various sampan vessels used for everything from the sale of fruit and religious ceremonies to warfare and thievery. For more than 200 years, the gouaches hung in Skärfva Manor House, the home of shipbuilder and dockyard manager Vice Admiral Fredric Henric af Chapman, on the outskirts of Karlskrona, Sweden. In 2014, the collection was broken up for auction, and Nordstjernan AB bought the gouaches in order to keep them in the country. Today they can be found at the UNESCO World Heritage Site Engelsberg Ironworks and, thanks to their virtually pristine condition, are a unique chronicle of the dream of China and contacts between east and west. The book is the first detailed account of the collection and examines the gouaches from both an art history and an historical perspective. With this as a foundation, they can continue to serve as an important entry into the 18th century world of ideas and for understanding Fredric Henric af Chapman’s great importance as a collector and visionary.

Throughout history, royals have strongly influenced the form and content of gardens and parks. Our strong connection to these cultivated places is not only due to our fascination with nature itself, but reveals our relationship to royal houses, monarchy and the nation. Through the conservation of these places we do not only see and view nature, but our own cultural heritage. In this book, eight garden experts from five countries provide important examples of how kings and regents, through their extraordinary creations, have shaped history, communicated with the world and mirrored themselves in their respective eras. The essays stem from a seminar, The Royal Garden, arranged by The Axel and Margaret Ax:son Johnson Foundation for Public Benefit and held at Drottningholm Palace near Stockholm in 2015.

What is the origin of the idea of America, how has it been shaped by history, and where is it headed? In this book on the idea of America, based upon the Engelsberg Seminar that took place in 2009, the objective is to try to gain a clearer understanding of the original ideas and sources for what is known as the American idea, examine how this idea is nurtured in the US and received elsewhere in the world, and consider the question of whether we are now approaching a ‘post-American world’. Who, in that case, will take over the US’s role as global leader – China or India; what kind of world would we then live in, and what ideals would we thus be guided by in the future? Contributors: Pauline Maier, Daniel Walker Howe, David Reynolds, Philippe Roger, Kathleen Burk, Reinhold Wagnleitner, David Ellwood, Anatol Lieven, Godfrey Hodgson, James Carroll, Deepak Lal, Jong-Yil Ra, Peter Baldwin, Robert J Shapiro, Oliver Kamm, Edward Luce, Alan Wolfe, Göran Rosenberg, Anders Stephanson, Douglas Murray, Peter Beinart.
