Dao De Jing, or so simply referred to as the Laozi, is a Chinese classic text. The text's true authorship and date of composition or compilation are still debated. The oldest excavated portion dates back to the late 4th century BCE, but modern scholarship dates other parts of the text as having been written, or at least compiled later than the earliest portions of the Zhuangzi. The Tao Te Ching, along with the Zhuangzi, is a fundamental text for both philosophical and religious Taoism, and strongly influenced other schools, such as Legalism, Confucianism, and Chinese Buddhism, which when first introduced into China was largely interpreted through the use of Daoist words and concepts. Many Chinese artists, including poets, painters, calligraphers, and even gardeners, have used the Daodejing as a source of inspiration. Its influence has also spread widely outside East Asia, and it is among the most translated works in world literature.
The Practical Tao Te Ching of Lao-zi: Rational Meditations on Non-duality, Impermanence, Wu-wei (non-striving), Nature and Naturalness, and Virtue
The Tao Te Ching (or the more modern spelling: Dao de Jing), is said to be one of the most translated texts in the world, second to only the Bible. So, "Why is another translated version of the Tao Te Ching necessary?" you might ask. If you have ever before read a translation of the Tao Te Ching, you have inevitably come across one of three common variations: 1) a translation by a non-native English speaker whose writing style is not so familiar or easily comprehensible, 2) a translation by a Western academic who, focusing on historical and political context, includes a plethora of dry factual information, or 3) a translation that appears rather mystical, abstruse, spiritual and poetic, but written by someone who lacks understanding and familiarity of the Chinese language and, consequently, the actual source of the Tao Te Ching. Chen Zhi-qiang's new version, The Practical Tao Te Ching of Lao-zi, takes a fresh and original perspective by interpreting the Chinese language source while considering the fundamental Tao sensibilities of: Non-duality, impermanence, wu-wei (non-striving), nature and naturalness, and Virtue. Read the Tao Te Ching with these basic Tao concepts in mind and realize what truths Lao-zi recognizes about the nature of our humanity, our existential reality, and our shared human condition.

D o d Jīng This book is a brief introduction to, and translation of, the D o d Jīng, one the most translated and published books in the world. It is attributed to 老子 Lǎo Zǐ, a Chinese scholar and contributor in a line of philosophy and metaphysics that is known as taoism or Daoism, depending on whether the Wade-Giles or Pinyin transliteration is used. Lǎo Zǐ means 'Old Master' in English. The book contains eighty-one chapters, or verses. This translation by Thomas Hayes and Li Sijin includes in the Introduction, the pronouncement of other non-dualistic and mystical masters across the ages and from both Western and Eastern origins. This reflects the fact that the one truth may be spoken about in different ways and styles, but with the message remaining consistent. It is written during the crisis of the Covid-19 outbreak and contains words that can be reflected on to provide comfort in these troubled times. The words are perhaps the best tonic of all at the present time. Please use the time afforded to you by any unsought furlough to reflect on the wisdom in this book and so turn the negative into the positive.

"so both thrive both discovering bliss-real power is female it rises from beneath" These 81 brief poems from the 5th century BCE make up a foundational text in world culture. In elegant, simple yet elusive language, the Daodejing develops its vision of humankind's place in the world in personal, moral, social, political and cosmic terms. Martyn Crucefix's superb new versions in English reflect - for the very first time - the radical fluidity of the original Chinese texts as well as placing the mysterious 'dark' feminine power at their heart. Laozi, the putative author, is said to have despaired of the world's venality and corruption, but he was persuaded to leave the Daodejing poems as a parting gift, as inspiration and as a moral and political handbook. Crucefix's versions reveal an astonishing empathy with what the poems have to say about good and evil, war and peace, government, language, poetry and the pedagogic process. When the true teacher emerges, no matter how detached, unimpressive, even muddled she may appear, Laozi assures us "there are treasures beneath".

Actions & Retributions: A Taoist Treatise on Attaining Spiritual Virtue, Longevity, and Immortality

The Treatise on Actions and Retributions is probably the most widely distributed and printed spiritual book in history, having been cherished by Taoist, Buddhist, Confucian clergy, and the Chinese populace for centuries. It is definitely Taoist in origin, and Stuart Alve Olson has done an excellent job of presenting its Taoist roots and showing how it's meant to be studied as a Taoist internal alchemy text. Much of this work provides first-time translations and explanations of this incredible source text on Taoist philosophy and internal spiritual cultivation. This book belongs in the library of everyone interested in Taoist teachings and practices. Actions & Retributions serves as a foundational guide for Taoist cultivators seeking the lofty goals of achieving virtue (spiritual strength), longevity, and immortality, presenting an alternative method of internal alchemy. This Taoist text teaches that our actions of performing good deeds and maintaining correct moral behavior brings good fortune; by quelling the negative influences of the inner spirits of the body and mind, we may attain longevity and optimum health; and through internal cultivation of our Heavenly (Hun) Spirits, we can achieve immortality. This treatise first appeared in tenth century CE along with its sister work, The Supreme Exalted One's Classic on Eradicating the Three Corpse Spirits and Nine Worms for the Protection of Life. Studied by Taoist clergy and familiar to serious Taoist cultivators, this lesser-known work is an integral document for understanding the Treatise on Actions and Retributions. Stuart Alve Olson incorporates excerpts from this text not only to clarify aspects of the Treatise on Actions and Retributions, but to also introduce the classic for a future volume, as these two complementary works should be studied together to fully appreciate the distinctly Taoist perspective and teachings they collectively provide.
