These adaptations of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass are faithful to Lewis Carroll's original text except this edition is in the stacked prose format instead of being boxed in paragraphs. The pages are divided into two columns of text and the lines are short and often divided by punctuation such as a comma, period, or question mark, etc., which can make for fast and easy reading. This stacked prose format adaptation breaks up lines of text in the way you would read them aloud and is ideal for speed reading, reading aloud, and dramatic reading. Empty lines are inserted instead of paragraph indents. This adaptation makes the story easy to read without the hyphenation of words at the ends of lines. The human eye may get tired reading across a wide line of text, but when lines are short, the reading can be faster. Younger readers may enjoy this adaptation because it is easier to understand. Stacked prose is easier to read than normal prose because it is structured more like people talk.
Charles Lutwidge Dodgson ( 27 January 1832 - 14 January 1898), better known by the pseudonym Lewis Carroll, was an English author, mathematician, logician, Anglican deacon and photographer. His most famous writings are Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and its sequel Through the Looking-Glass, as well as the poems "The Hunting of the Snark" and "Jabberwocky," all examples of the genre of literary nonsense.
BREAKFAST, dinner, tea; in extreme cases, breakfast, luncheon, dinner, tea, supper, and a glass of something hot at bedtime. What care we take about feeding the lucky body Which of us does as much for his mind? And what causes the difference? Is the body so much the more important of the two? By no means: but life depends on the body being fed, whereas we can continue to exist as animals (scarcely as men) though the mind be utterly starved and neglected. Therefore Nature provides that, in case of serious neglect of the body, such terrible consequences of discomfort and pain shall ensue, as will soon bring us back to a sense of our duty: and some of the functions necessary to life she does for us altogether, leaving us no choice in the matter. It would fare but ill with many of us if we were left to superintend our own digestion and circulation. 'Bless me ' one would cry, 'I forgot to wind up my heart this morning To think that it has been standing still for the last three hours ' 'I can't walk with you this afternoon, ' a friend would say, 'as I have no less than eleven dinners to digest. I had to let them stand over from last week, being so busy, and my doctor says he will not answer for the consequences if I wait any longer ' Well, it is, I say, for us that the consequences of neglecting the body can be clearly seen and felt; and it might be well for some if the mind were equally visible and tangible-if we could take it, say, to the doctor, and have its pulse felt. 'Why, what have you been doing with this mind lately? How have you fed it? It looks pale, and the pulse is very slow.' 'Well, doctor, it has not had much regular food lately. I gave it a lot of sugar-plums yesterday.' 'Sugar-plums What kind' 'Well, they were a parcel of conundrums, sir.' 'Ah, I thought so. Now just mind this: if you go on playing tricks like that, you'll spoil all its teeth, and get laid up with mental indigestion. You must have nothing but the plainest reading for the next few days. Take care now No novels on any account '

---- This Russian translation of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland by Yury Nesterenko is published with the classic illustrations by John Tenniel. From the translator's Foreword: "...all Russian translations of 'Alice' which I encountered are rather far from the original. Boris Zakhoder was the most honest since he directly called his version 'a paraphrase'. Other translators who did not make such a statement generally took undue freedoms with the Carroll's text. I will not claim that their translations are no good. On the contrary, Zakhoder's version, for example, is written in a more vivid style than the original-but there is one little problem: Lewis Carroll did not write it. So, my purpose was to make a translation as accurate as possible-certainly, as far as the language differences between English and Russian allow." Yury Nesterenko (b. 1972) lives in Florida, and writes poetry and science fiction.

The rule is, jam to-morrow and jam yesterday - but never jam to-day. Lewis Carroll's Through the Looking-Glass, and What Alice Found There was first published in December 1871 (dated 1872). Although Carroll intended Looking-Glass to be a follow-up piece to the immediately successful Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (1865), he created an entirely new fantasy world with a revised narrative structure. The twelve-chapter format was retained, but Looking-Glass is significantly longer than Wonderland (224 compared to 192 pages in the first editions), and introduces a range of new characters, and is framed by Alice's progression across a chess board to become queen. This new edition focuses solely on Through the Looking-Glass, with a penetrating and informative introduction by Zoe Jaques, including the most recent research and critical opinion on the subject matter.

Lewis Carroll's "Alice's Adventures of Wonderland" translated into Irish by Nicholas Williams, in a bilingual volume with the English original text facing the Irish text.
One thing was certain, that the white kitten had had nothing to do with it: -it was the black kitten's fault entirely. For the white kitten had been having its face washed by the old cat for the last quarter of an hour (and bearing it pretty well, considering); so you see that it couldn't have had any hand in the mischief. The way Dinah washed her children's faces was this: first she held the poor thing down by its ear with one paw, and then with the other paw she rubbed its face all over, the wrong way, beginning at the nose: and just now, as I said, she was hard at work on the white kitten, which was lying quite still and trying to purr-no doubt feeling that it was all meant for its good. But the black kitten had been finished with earlier in the afternoon, and so, while Alice was sitting curled up in a corner of the great arm-chair, half talking to herself and half asleep, the kitten had been having a grand game of romps with the ball of worsted Alice had been trying to wind up, and had been rolling it up and down till it had all come undone again; and there it was, spread over the hearth-rug, all knots and tangles, with the kitten running after its own tail in the middle." Oh, you wicked little thing " cried Alice, catching up the kitten, and giving it a little kiss to make it understand that it was in disgrace. "Really, Dinah ought to have taught you better manners You ought, Dinah, you know you ought " she added, looking reproachfully at the old cat, and speaking in as cross a voice as she could manage-and then she scrambled back into the arm-chair, taking the kitten and the worsted with her, and began winding up the ball again. But she didn't get on very fast, as she was talking all the time, sometimes to the kitten, and sometimes to herself. Kitty sat very demurely on her knee, pretending to watch the progress of the winding, and now and then putting out one paw and gently touching the ball, as if it would be glad to help, if it might." Do you know what to-morrow is, Kitty?" Alice began. "You'd have guessed if you'd been up in the window with me-only Dinah was making you tidy, so you couldn't. I was watching the boys getting in sticks for the bonfire-and it wants plenty of sticks, Kitty Only it got so cold, and it snowed so, they had to leave off. Never mind, Kitty, we'll go and see the bonfire to-morrow." Here Alice wound two or three turns of the worsted round the kitten's neck, just to see how it would look: this led to a scramble, in which the ball rolled down upon the floor, and yards and yards of it got unwound again.4"Do you know, I was so angry, Kitty," Alice went on as soon as they were comfortably settled again, "when I saw all the mischief you had been doing, I was very nearly opening the window, and putting you out into the snow And you'd have deserved it, you little mischievous darling What have you got to say for yourself? Now don't interrupt me " she went on, holding up one finger

This textual commentary looks at Through the Looking-Glass and What Alice Found There quite simply, as a children's novel, investi-gating the book's narrative structure, analysing how Carroll successfully constructed a pioneer-ing book for children that was to stand the test of time, remaining remarkably relevant to the present day. There are many depths and subtleties in this book that can only be properly appreciated by examining the text line by line. The writing is supremely skilful, and will stand the closest scrutiny-even virtually to every line of the narrative. Most books would crumble under such close analysis. It is testimony to the strength, depth, and quality of Alice that the book comes through such intense examination and survives triumphantly. ----- Selwyn Goodacre has a large Lewis Carroll collection includ-ing over 2000 copies of the "Alice" books. He is a past chair-man of the Lewis Carroll Society, and edited the Society journal from 1974-1997. For years he has pursued a special interest in the text of the "Alice" books, which has led to his current commentary on, and analysis of, the way they were written.
Written in 1865 by Lewis Caroll, Alice in Wonderland is nothing but a literary wonder. The story starts when Alice goes down a rabbit hole and her world turns upside down. Full of unexpected things, mysteries that need solving, and magic, Alice in Wonderland is a must-read for all who love classic fiction and a story that is brilliant.

It differs from Carruthers' original text chiefly in two ways: a regular distinction between the vowel "i" and the consonant "j" has been made, and long vowels are marked with macrons consistently throughout. All vowels have been carefully investigated, including the vowels in syllables long by position. In a few isolated cases where the classical vowel lengths are in dispute, or where usage evidently vacillated, the vowels have been left unmarked. The Latin-English glossary at the end has been greatly enlarged. Instead of treating only a few Neo-Latin words and phrases peculiar to this book, the extended glossary now also covers over two hundred less common classical words. It is our hope that this will enable a much larger group of our readers to enjoy Carruthers' translation without having to resort to external dictionaries. Following a number of requests for a bilingual edition we have made this version available. To the extent possible we have kept the same text on facing pages.
