Max Pechstein was a protagonist of the artistic avant-garde in Germany before the First World War. He was one of the founders of Expressionism within the circle of the "BrUcke" painters, creating pictures and graphic works of ingenious and impulsively demonstrated expressiveness in an oeuvre displaying a wealth of thematic and technical skills.

Emil Nolde and Karl Schmidt-Rottluff are among the outstanding German Expressionists. They share a love of unusual flowers and plants.
