From the President of the Research Society on Alcoholism The sixteenth volume of Recent Developments in Alcoholism contains the latest information on the field of alcoholism treatment research. This scholarly volume includes comprehensive reviews of the methodologies available to evaluate treatment outcome, state-of-the art psychosocial interventions, and recent advances in pharmacological adjuncts to treatment that are currently available and those on the brink of application. Other sections of the book address special issues in the treatment of alcohol dependence, including the treatment of the adolescents and other unique populations, the management of tobacco dependence, and the role of spirituality in recovery, among others. The clinician will find these reviews an important resource for learning about e- dence based treatments for alcoholism, and the researcher will find the synt- sis of recent developments informative and forward looking. The research agenda for the future rests soundly on the progress to date and additional advances in the treatment of alcoholism can be predicted in the near future. Stephanie O'Malley, Ph. D. President, Research Society on Alcoholism xi Preface From the President of the American Society of Addiction Medicine This excellent volume presents investigations covering a wide spectrum of scientific issues. It is also evident that many of these articles have clinical s- nificance, ranging from assessments of disorder, monitoring clinical progress, and behavioral and pharmacological interventions.

Not just for lawyers, these illuminating histories of popular law-related expressions will delight anyone fascinated by words, by history, or by law and law enforcement Law-related words and phrases abound in our everyday language, often without our being aware of their origins or their particular legal significance: boilerplate, jailbait, pound of flesh, rainmaker, the third degree. This insightful and entertaining book reveals the unknown stories behind familiar legal expressions that come from sources as diverse as Shakespeare, vaudeville, and Dr. Seuss. Separate entries for each expression follow no prescribed formula but instead focus on the most interesting, enlightening, and surprising aspects of the words and their evolution. Popular myths and misunderstandings are explored and exploded, and the entries are augmented with historical images and humorous sidebars. Lively and unexpected, Lawtalk will draw a diverse array of readers with its abundance of linguistic, legal, historical, and cultural information. Those readers should be forewarned: upon finishing one entry, there is an irresistible temptation to turn to another, and yet another . . .
Psychotherapy for the Treatment of Substance Abuse

Psychotherapy for the Treatment of Substance Abuse

In adapting a new, clinically focused manual from their popular American Psychiatric Publishing Textbook of Substance Abuse Treatment, now in its fourth edition, Dr. Marc Galanter and Dr. Herbert Kleber intend Psychotherapy for the Treatment of Substance Abuse to be of practical application to both experienced clinicians and those new to the field substance abuse intervention. This manual: • Reviews the most common psychotherapeutic interventions for opiod-related and alcohol-related substance abuse disorders.• Features chapters authored by leading authorities on each intervention covered.• Gives valuable insight into the substance abuse disorders that affect over 20% of the U. S. population at some time in their lives.• Outlines diagnostic tools such as patient assessment, patient placement criteria, and how to test for and identify recent drug use. • Confirms that the most common interventions for virtually all substance abuse disorders are psychotherapy and behavioral approaches. Only one in ten patients with substance abuse disorders actually seek and receive treatment. The text is intended to address and overcome the shortage of substance abuse treatment providers and the inadequate training of many clinicians in the intervention techniques they will need in order to help these patients. Psychotherapy for the Treatment of Substance Abuse brings together chapters by experts in their respective treatment specialties, written in a consistent format and style for easy reference. Chapters include relevant case studies on the following topics: • Drs. Greenfield and Hennessey's chapter on assessing the patient combines key didactic points with the compassion and insights of two experienced therapists.• Dr. el-Guebaly lays out the cross-cultural aspects of addiction therapy and its increasing importance in our culturally diverse society. • Cognitive-behavioral therapy (Dr. Carroll), motivational therapy (Dr. Di Clemente), and contingency management (Dr. Higgins) are probably the three most studied behavioral interventions for substance abuse disorders, though not the most used. • The principles outlined by Drs. Frances, Mack, and Lightdale in covering psychodynamic psychotherapy can improve insights into and practice of other modalities. • Twelve-step facilitation (Dr. Ries) lays out how to improve the chance of successful referral to Alcoholic Anonymous as well as how to utilize its precepts in other settings.• Network Therapy, a specialty practiced by volume editor Marc Galanter, is a multimodal approach to rehabilitation that enlists the support of family members and friends to try to achieve prompt abstinence and ongoing relapse prevention. Multiple techniques discussed in this volume are brought to life in an accompanying DVD that reinforces the text by sharing reenacted segments of actual sessions of multimodal Network Therapy. This text is highly recommended for psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, psychiatric nurses, residents and fellows, and anyone interested in substance abuse treatment and prevention.
Lowering the Bar

What do you call 600 lawyers at the bottom of the sea? Marc Galanter calls it an opportunity to investigate the meanings of a rich and time-honored genre of American humor. ""Lowering the Bar"" analyzes hundreds of jokes from Mark Twain classics to contemporary anecdotes about Dan Quayle, Johnnie Cochran, and Kenneth Starr. Drawing on representations of law and lawyers in the mass media, political discourse, and public opinion surveys, Galanter finds that the increasing reliance on law coexists uneasily with anxiety about the ""legalization"" of society. Always entertaining, his book explores the tensions between American's deep-seated belief in the law and their ambivalence about lawyers.
Spirituality and the Healthy Mind

Spirituality and the Healthy Mind

Spirituality has emerged as a prominent theme in contemporary culture. It is seen in issues as diverse as Eastern philosophies and religious awakenings; its psychological impact is apparent in alternative medicine, Alcoholics Anonymous, and meditation. In their own ways, each of these has helped people get relief from the problems psychiatrists often treat. But the mental health profession has generally ignored these issues, focusing on specific target symptoms, from anxiety to heavy drinking. Their efforts relay increasingly on medications and brief therapies as they succumb to the chilling influence of managed care. This raises an important question: Can the spiritual and professional, two perspectives that seem different, be reconciled? This book is designed to provide an answer to this question. It draws on recent findings in psychology, neuroscience, and innovative therapies to understand how people in America and worldwide express their spiritual needs. It then shows how the mentally ill, substance abusers, and people troubled by a sense that something is missing in their lives can be helped by developing a sense of personal meaning, while still benefiting from contemporary therapy and medications. Finally, it examines shortcomings in both the biomedical and spiritually-oriented approaches. The book draws on clinical experience and recent research studies, including the author's work over thirty years. This is enhanced by case studies drawn from patients, mental health professionals, the lay public, and even cult members. All this is brought together to create a vivid understanding of how mental health treatment can be made more effective by giving meaning to people's lives.

Why do people join cults? How do cults exert such a strong influence over their members' beliefs and even their appearance? These and other questions about the operation of cult groups are answered in this unique book. The psychological forces that enable cults to exert their intense influence are analysed in detail and with many examples. These forces include social cohesiveness, which has its parallels in the ties that bind family members together; shared beliefs, which set the groups' standards for behaviour; and altered consciousness, which can lead to a rapid change in the attitudes of recruits and members. For this second edition, Galanter has added three new chapters on cult developments of the 1990s -- the Branch Davidians, Aum Shinrikyo, and Heaven's Gate. The books also features 32 new photographs.

Tournament of Lawyers traces in detail the rise of one hundred of the nation's top firms in order to diagnose the health of the business of American law. Galanter and Palay demonstrate that much of the large firm's organizational success stems from its ability to blend the talents of experienced partners with those of energetic junior lawyers driven by a powerful incentive—the race to win "the promotion-to-partner tournament." This calmly reasoned study reveals, however, that the very causes of the spiraling growth of the large law firm may lead to its undoing." Galanter and Palay pose questions and offer some answers which are certain to change the way big firm practice is regarded. To describe their work as challenging is something of an understatement: they at times delight, stimulate, frustrate and even depress the reader, but they never disappoint. Tournament of Lawyers is essential to the understanding of the business of the big law firms."—Jean and Colin Fergus, New York Law Journal
