Marcel Proust's genius for illuminating pain is on spectacular display in this recently discovered trove of his correspondence, Letters to His Neighbor. Already suffering from noise within his cork-lined walls, Proust's poor soul was not ready for the fresh hell of his new upstairs neighbor, Dr. Williams, a dentist with a thriving practice directly above his head. Chiefly to Mme Williams, these ever-polite letters (often accompanied by flowers, books, or compliments) are frequently hilarious--Proust couches his pained frustration in gracious eloquence. In Lydia Davis's hands, the digressive brilliance of his sentences shines: "Don't speak of annoying neighbors, but of neighbors so charming (an association of words contradictory in principle since Montesquiou claims that most horrible of all are 1: neighbors and 2: the smell of post offices) that they leave the constant tantalizing regret that one cannot take advantage of their neighborliness." Richly illustrated with facsimile letters and photographs, Letters to His Neighbor is catnip for lovers of Proust.

Across seven monumental volumes, Proust intricately weaves a narrative tapestry that spans the realms of memory, desire, and the inexorable passage of time. At the heart of this extraordinary work lies the enigmatic narrator, who embarks on a quest to reconcile the fragments of his past with the realities of his present. Set against the backdrop of belle poque France, Proust's prose transports readers into the hallowed halls of French high society, where glittering soir es and elegant salons serve as the stage for intricate social dramas and clandestine affairs. Yet, beneath the veneer of opulence lies a world fraught with longing and disillusionment, where the pursuit of pleasure often leads to profound existential questioning. Through the narrator's keen observations and introspective musings, Proust delves deep into the recesses of human experience, illuminating the complexities of memory, perception, and identity. From the evocative scent of a madeleine dipped in tea to the fleeting glimpse of a loved one's face, each moment serves as a portal to the past, unlocking a floodgate of emotions and associations that blur the boundaries between reality and reverie. As the narrator navigates the intricacies of his own memories, he encounters a cast of unforgettable characters who populate his world with their quirks, eccentricities, and hidden desires. From the enigmatic Swann and the captivating Odette to the charismatic Baron de Charlus, each figure leaves an indelible mark on the narrator's psyche, shaping his understanding of love, friendship, and the elusive nature of human connection.
