Marcus Porcius Cato

Caton opetuksia on myöhäisantiikin aikana laadittu kokoelma Cato vanhemman (243-148 eaa) nimiin laitettuja roomalaisia elämänohjeita. Runomittaan laaditut parisäkeet opastavat nuorta koululaista kunnialliseen käytökseen ja valmistavat häntä kohti aikuisuutta. Viisaudet ovat luonteeltaan maallisia ja käsittelevät asioita perhe- ja ystävyyssuhteiden vaalimisesta menestykseen, vaikutusvallan käyttöön ja toimintaan julkisessa elämässä. Caton opetukset oli keskiajalla yksi Euroopan luetuimmista teoksista. Sitä käytettiin latinan alkeisoppikirjana likimain kaikissa kouluissa yli tuhannen vuoden ajan.
