The Poems

The Poems

Cicero's poetry has often been adversely, but unfairly criticised on the basis of the unfortunate line "O fortunam natam ne consule Roman". But this book argues there is much to admire in his translations from Homer, from Greek tragedy and especially from the "Phaenomena" of Aratus which influenced Virgil's use of that poem in the "Georgics". Cicero's hexameter verse, which is closely analyzed in this edition, marks a stage in the development of Latin metre, midway between Lucretius and Virgil. This edition was first published in 1933 and collects together all of the surviving lines and provides a full introduction and commentary.

This useful edition of Cicero's speech De imperio Cn. Pompe was first published in Macmillan's Modern School Classics series in 1966 and has been frequently reprinted. It contains a substantial introduction with sections on Cicero's and Pompey's lives, on Roman oratory, and on the historical and political background to the speech. The Latin text is followed by extensive notes on both language and context, and the edition is completed by maps and a vocabulary.
The Nature of the Gods and on Divination

The Nature of the Gods and on Divination

Marcus Tullius Cicero

Prometheus Books
1997
Nidottu
In The Nature of the Gods, the eminent Roman statesman and philosopher Marcus Tullius Cicero (106-43 BCE) analyzes the positions of the Stoic, Epicurean, and Academic schools on the existence and nature of the gods, and whether they act in the interests of humankind. Cotta, the Academic spokesman, criticizes his Epicurean and Stoic interlocutors for their failures, respectively, to account for human freedom and for the accidents and evils that occur in life. Lacking sure knowledge of what gods are, human beings are left to their own intelligence and natural abilities to make their way in an uncertain world. In the dialogue of On Divination, Cicero and his brother, Quintus, examine various sorts of divination on Stoic principles, which Quintus upholds. Cicero counters that there is no such "science" of divination, and that the ambiguities and absurdities inherent in oracles, prodigies, and dreams preclude any divine agency. They are, rather, the result of natural phenomena or coincidence.
Cicero: Pro P. Sulla oratio

Cicero: Pro P. Sulla oratio

In 62 BC, the year after his suppression of Catiline, Cicero delivered Pro Sulla, a successful defence of P. Cornelius Sulla, the nephew of the dictator, on a charge of participation in the Catilinarian conspiracy. This edition, which contains a new text together with introduction, commentary and appendices, is the first full-scale scholarly treatment of the speech. The text takes account of Gulielmius’ reports of the missing portion of the Erfurtensis manuscript, recovered by Dr Berry and published as a preliminary to this edition in 1989; a complete collation is provided of this and the other principal manuscripts. The introduction includes a reassessment of Sulla’s guilt and Cicero’s undertaking of the case, and also considers issues such as the prose rhythm of the speech and its publication. The commentary discusses history, text and syntax as well as rhetoric and style.

Cicero’s De re publica contains the fullest ancient account of the theory of the mixed constitution and the oldest extant narrative of early Roman history; it concludes with the Dream of Scipio, one of the most influential ancient visions of the afterlife. The argument of the dialogue concerns the relationship between political theory and practice, and between social institutions and the individual citizen. This edition of most of the surviving portions of De re publica is the most detailed commentary ever to appear in English. It explains Cicero’s philosophical argument and its relationship to his account of early Rome, and thoroughly elucidates the language and style of the treatise. The introduction offers a new and provocative interpretation of Cicero’s dialogue as a work both of literature and of political philosophy.

Cicero's Verrine Oration Ii.4

Sheila K. Dickison; Marcus Tullius Cicero

Wayne State University Press

nidottu
This text and commentary on Cicero's Verrines II.4 will guide students of Latin in translating a classical piece on political corruption in ancient Rome. Cicero's Verrine Oration II.4 is a comprehensive and versatile tool that will assist students in the early stages of reading and understanding Latin literary texts. Dickison's volume includes the complete Oxford Classical text of Cicero's Verrines II.4. Her detailed commentary provides students with generous assistance in identifying and managing difficult constructions and in recognizing forms and supplying definitions for vocabulary. When translations are given for difficult phrases, a literal rendering of the Latin is often included as a means of help. A brief summary in English of each section accompanies the commentary. A glossary of every world in the text helps students with a modest knowledge of Latin to read the text without experiencing undue frustration.

This impeccable edition still stands the test of time for students at school and university who wish to approach Cicero's major speeches against Mark Antony after the assassination of Julius Caesar. Denniston's commentary gives assistance with grammatical matters but concentrates on presenting plainly, yet fully, the evidence bearing on problems of the historical background and features of Roman life and institutions to which the text alludes. There is a clear introduction which sets out the speeches' historical context and provides an analysis of their content.

The Roman statesman Lucius Licinius Murena led legions in the Mithridatic Wars and subsequently became administrator of Transalpine Gaul. On his election as consul in 62 BC he was accused of bribery and defended by (among others) Cicero, in this famous speech. Murena was acquitted, though the balance of opinion is that he was probably guilty. This school edition includes introduction, the Latin text, notes and vocabulary.
