The 'tick-tock' of a grandfather clock is the rhythm of Margaret's life and a sound that has marked her family's journey for over a century. Her family's clock making business started in London with Margaret's grandfather Edwin Donald Hughes. In 1912, Edwin moved to Melbourne, Australia and later opened the watch maker and jeweller shop in East Malvern that would become the backdrop to Margaret's childhood. Margaret loved listening to the cuckoo clocks and the chimes of the huge grandfather clocks, even when she had the nerve-wracking job of dusting the stock. Though the watches are now digital, their family business continues. Margaret's sister and brother-in-law followed in their father's footsteps, and now their son carries on the legacy.

Eleven-year-old Adam Elgin is an avid baseball player who has been playing the piano since he was four years old. An orchestra is to be formed in his small elementary school in order to participate in a Gala for the Year of the Child Project. They have teamed up with another small elementary school to expand the orchestra's numbers. All interested students must audition for the orchestra. Adam gets the audition music from the school's music teacher and has a short time to prepare for the audition. Everybody who plays an instrument, wants to be in the orchestra and so they practice, and practice, and practice for their audition. Rather, the book explores how new forms of cosmopolitanism could be articulated despite the awkward complicities and liminalities inhabited by individuals and characteristic of cosmopolitan thought zones.
