Focusing for the first time on why attorney general Robert F. Kennedy wasn’t killed in 1963 instead of on why President John F. Kennedy was, Mark Shaw offers a stunning and provocative assassination theory that leads directly to the family patriarch, Joseph P. Kennedy. Mining fresh information and more than forty new interviews, Shaw weaves a spellbinding narrative involving Mafia don Carlos Marcello; Jack Ruby (Lee Harvey Oswald’s killer); Ruby’s attorney, Melvin Belli; and, ultimately, the Kennedy brothers and their father. Shaw addresses these tantalizing questions: Why, shortly after his brother’s death, did a grief-stricken RFK tell a colleague, “I thought they would get one of us . . . I thought it would be me”? Why was Belli, an attorney with almost no defense experience (but proven ties to the Mafia), chosen as Jack Ruby’s attorney? How does Belli’s Mafia connection call into question his legal strategy, which ultimately led to the Ruby’s first-degree murder conviction and death sentence? What was Joseph Kennedy’s relationship to organized crime? And how was his insistence that JFK appoint RFK as attorney general tantamount to signing the president’s death warrant? For fifty years, Shaw maintains, researchers investigating the president’s murder in Dallas have been looking at the wrong motives and actors. The Poison Patriarch offers a shocking reassessment—one that is sure to alter the course of future assassination debates.
This is the definitive collection of Mark Shaw's renowned photographs of the Kennedys, featuring many unseen images. For the first time, complete access has been granted to the Mark Shaw Photographic Archive in order to produce this fresh and expanded take on Shaw's classic 1964 work, The John F. Kennedys: A Family Album. Over 50 percent of the material in this beautiful anthology has never been seen before and features the finest reproductions of Shaw's photographs yet seen in print. Shaw shot the Kennedys for the first time for Life magazine in 1959. He developed a close friendship with the family that gave him extraordinary and informal access to their inner circle. His stunning shots from this time capture some of their most intimate and candid moments. Photographs include Kennedy's favorite shot of himself, walking alone on the dunes at Hyannis Port, plus images on the campaign trail, relaxing at home with friends, entertaining at the White House and the somber days immediately following the assassination. Mark Shaw (1921-1969) was an American photographer renowned for his photographs of the Kennedys and for his fashion photography. Shaw worked for magazines such as Harper's Bazaar, Mademoiselle and Life. During his 16 years at Life, he shot 27 covers and over 100 stories. He photographed the rich and the famous, including Elizabeth Taylor, Grace Kelly, Audrey Hepburn, Pablo Picasso, Brigitte Bardot and Pope Paul VI. He was also the first photographer to shoot backstage and in color at the European couture fashion shows. Shaw won numerous awards for his still photography and commercial work, most notably with his Vanity Fair lingerie campaign.

Thomas Merton is perhaps the most popular American religion writer of the last hundred years. Despite appearances to the contrary, in 1966 he was a troubled, lonely monk; until he met a nurse who he fell in love with. At the same time, he struggled with the challenge of whether to choose her over complete devotion to God. When he finally chose God, he emerged renewed: stronger and surer than he would have been without being tested by such a shattering conflict. While thousands are familiar with Merton and his writing, here for the first time is a private side of the famous monk. Based on journal entries, new information and sources such as fellow monks, this compelling work offers a fresh perspective on the revered figure.
"[A] cogent and well-informed discussion of the South African Police Service and the organisational problems it faces." —Stephen Ellis Since the mid-1990s, South Africa has experienced a crime wave of such unprecedented proportions that the ability of the new democracy to form a stable civil society and govern effectively has been called into question. In this timely book, Mark Shaw describes how a police force that was so effective under apartheid became so ineffectual in the face of rising crime. He shows how an increase in violent crime shapes society, police, and government, and discusses possible solutions for the current crisis. International crimes such as war, terrorism, and organized crime are explored along with crimes that affect individual security, such as armed robbery, murder, and rape. Crime and Policing in Post-Apartheid South Africa draws attention to both the national and the international dimensions of crime in this society in transition.
South Africa's Apartheid regime focused the energies of its police force on countering its political opponents rather than tackling "conventional" crime. This, together with the appalling legacy of social dislocation among the urban poor which it bequeathed to the ANC administration, has contributed to a tripling in recorded crime in the late 1990s. Crime is now seen to pose a serious threat to the country's stability. This text aims to analyze the causes and possible solutions to this situation. It discusses the extent of crime, its victims and criminal justice system in South Africa, and reviews the options available to government if it is to restore the public's confidence in its ability to tackle growing lawlessness.
