Mark Twain's work on Joan of Arc is titled in full Personal Recollections of Joan of Arc, by the Sieur Louis de Conte who is identified further as Joan's page and secretary. The work is fictionally presented as a translation from the manuscript by Jean Francois Alden, or, in the words of the published book, "Freely Translated out of the Ancient French into Modern English from the Original Unpublished Manuscript in the National Archives of France". De Conte is a fictionalized version of Joan of Arc's page Louis de Contes, and provides narrative unity to the story. He is presented as an individual who was with Joan during the three major phases of her life - as a youth in Domremy, as the commander of Charles' army on military campaign, and as a defendant at the trial in Rouen. The book is presented as a translation by Alden of de Conte's memoirs, written in his later years for the benefit of his descendants.

Roughing It Is the story of the Mark Twain's trip to Nevada to join his brother, who had been named secretary of the territory. Twain writes: "My brother had just been appointed Secretary of Nevada Territory-an office of such majesty that it concentrated in itself the duties and dignities of Treasurer, Comptroller, Secretary of State, and Acting Governor in the Governor's absence. A salary of eighteen hundred dollars a year and the title of 'Mr. Secretary, ' gave to the great position an air of wild and imposing grandeur. I was young and ignorant, and I envied my brother." Although this story is based on his real experiences traveling as a young man, Twain makes good use of exaggeration and other rhetorical devices to relate his tales and keep them relevant to the reader, as well as developing them into singular pieces of a larger whole. His skill at relating stories is never in doubt, and it is no wonder that Twain is quoted as having said, "Never let the truth get in the way of a good story."

Mark Twain’s gloriously funny Diary of Adam and Eve, which John Updike described as a paradigm of the relations between sexes, is presented here with a number of other Twain pieces on our two oldest ancestors, showing the writer’s interest in this most famous episode of the Bible. By giving a voice to Adam and Eve, and by hitting all the notes on the literary scale – from the intimate to the comical, from the journalistic to the idyllic – Twain displays the brilliance and wit for which he is rightly considered one of the greatest satirists of all time.
