A core principle of physics is knowledge gained from data. Thus, deep learning has instantly entered physics and may become a new paradigm in basic and applied research. This textbook addresses physics students and physicists who want to understand what deep learning actually means, and what is the potential for their own scientific projects. Being familiar with linear algebra and parameter optimization is sufficient to jump-start deep learning. Adopting a pragmatic approach, basic and advanced applications in physics research are described. The idea of progress - the belief that humanity has been advancing constantly from past to present, and that this process will continue for the foreseeable future - is a worldview that has developed exclusively in the Western world. The idea has occupied a central position in the thinking of modern civilization from the late seventeenth-century Enlightenment to the present day. It is much more than a political theory. In its heyday, it permeated every area of social life. No one could avoid its pervasive influence; even those who took a negative view of abstract ideas succumbed to its irresistible charm. It came to constitute the predominant civil religion of Western civilization - a general religiosity in the political realm. Furthermore, it became part of the modern idea that every attempt to criticize amounts to an act of infidelity. It is time to realize that the ideology of continual social advance and human improvement essentially constitutes a religion in its own right, which, despite often bearing the name of Christianity, is in resolute opposition to biblical beliefs.

Diese Idee nimmt seit der Aufkl rung des sp ten 17. Jahrhunderts bis in unsere Zeit eine zentrale Stellung im Denken der modernen Zivilisation ein. Sie war weit mehr als eine philosophische Theorie. In ihrer Bl tezeit hat sie das gesamte gesellschaftliche Leben durchdrungen. Niemand konnte sich ihrem penetranten Einfluss entziehen. Selbst diejenigen, die abstrakten Ideen negativ gegen berstanden, erlagen ihrem unwiderstehlichen Charme. Aus ihr setzte sich die tonangebende Zivilreligion der westlichen Zivilisation - Ph nomene einer allgemeinen Religiosit t im politischen Bereich - zusammen. Sie wurde Teil des modernen Denkens, dass jeder Versuch der Kritik fast wie ein Akt der Treulosigkeit erschien. Es ist an der Zeit, sich dar ber bewusst zu werden, dass die Ideologie einer kontinuierlichen Vorw rtsentwicklung der Gesellschaft und Vervollkommnung des Menschen in ihrem tiefsten Kern eine eigenst ndige Religion ist, die besonders dadurch gekennzeichnet ist, dass sie sich mit aller Entschiedenheit - allerdings oftmals im Namen des Christentums - gegen den biblischen Glauben gestellt hat.
