The contemporary idea of the “work of art” is paradoxically both widely used and often unexamined. Therefore, we must re-evaluate the concept before we can understand what the deconstruction of aesthetics means for thinkers like Jacques Derrida, Jean-Luc Nancy, and Philippe Lacoue-Labarthe. By examining their analyses of works of visual art and contextualizing their thinking on the matter, Martta Heikkilä asserts that the implications of the “work of art,” “art,” and “the aesthetic” apply not only to philosophical questions but also to a broader area. Instead of the totality represented by the historical concept of Art, poststructuralist thinkers introduce the idea of the radical multiplicity of art and its works. From this notion arises the fundamental issue in Derrida and the poststructuralist tradition: how can we speak philosophically of art, which always exists as singular instances, as works? In Deconstruction and the Work of Art: Visual Arts and Their Critique in Contemporary French Thought, Heikkilä shows that the deconstructionist notions of art are still influential in the discourses of contemporary art, in which artworks proliferate and the concept of “work” is open-ended and expanding. This book offers an introduction to the deconstructionist theory of art and brings new perspectives to the complex, undecidable relation between philosophy and art.

Mitä on nykyinen taidegrafiikka ja millaista teoriaa se tarvitsee? Printed matters: merkitysten kerroksia -kirjan seitsemän kirjoittajaa pohtivat artikkeleissaan taidegrafiikan olomuotoja. Aiempina vuosisatoina graafisin menetelmin tuotettiin jäljennöksiä ja levitettiin kuvia. Vähitellen syntynyt moderni taidegrafiikka on puolestaan merkinnyt graafisten tekniikoiden kehitystä ja itsenäisen taidemuodon syntyä. Jäljentämisen rinnalla ja sijaan se perustuu nyt yhä moninaisempiin prosesseihin: heijastuksiin, toistoon vailla alkuperäistä mallia, kuvautumiseen ja vaikutelmien välittämiseen. On tullut aika kääntää katse ja tekemisen keskipiste kuvapinnan ulkopuolelle ja taiteen materiaalisuuteen: taidegrafiikan merkityksiin välinekeskeisyydestä luopumisen jälkeen, jolloin välineellä on yhä merkitystä.

This study explores the significance of art in Jean-Luc Nancy’s philosophy. The main object of the work is to discuss the notion of art and its contribution to some of Nancy’s central ontological ideas. Art’s importance is considered in its own right – the main questions being whether art does have ontological significance, and if so, how one should describe this with respect to the theme of presentation. According to the work’s central argument, with his thinking on art Nancy attempts to give one viewpoint to what is called the metaphysics of presence and to its deconstruction. On which grounds may one say that art is not reducible to philosophy? These topics are examined by highlighting the differentiation between the notions of «presentation» and «representation» with regard to the influence of Martin Heidegger and Jacques Derrida on Nancy’s thought.
