The wheels hummed on the rails, as 403 roared on and on into the black of night. Jock and Tom McNair were off --and they were sitting next to the pilot in the cab of the engine. For their part in a daring rescue, the boys had been rewarded with a trip across Canada, from Winnipeg to the Rockies, aboard a fast freight -- the dream of their lives come true, a glorious adventure dampened only by the mysterious stranger who haunted the caboose all along the line. Rarely has the excitement and irresistible appeal of railroading been so dramatically woven into such a thoroughly appealing story.
