Syllable Weight

Syllable Weight

The book is the first systematic exploration of a series of phonological phenomena previously thought to be unified under the rubric of syllable weight. Drawing on a typological survey of 400 languages, it is shown that the traditional conception that languages are internally consistent in their weight criteria across weight-based processes is not corroborated by the cross-linguistic survey. Rather than being consistent across phenomena within individual languages, weight turns out to be sensitive to the particular processes involved such that different phenomena display different distributions in weight criteria. The book goes on to explore the motivations behind the process-specific nature of weight, showing that phonetic factors explain much of the variation in weight criteria between phenomena and also the variation in criteria between languages for a single process. The book is unlike other studies in combining an extensive typological survey with detailed phonetic analysis of many languages. The finding that the widely studied phenomenon of syllable weight is not a unified phenomenon, contrary to the established view, is a significant result for the field of theoretical phonology. The book is also an important contribution to the field of phonetically-driven phonology, since it establishes a close link between the phonology of weight and various quantitative phonetic parameters.

""News Is A Weapon"" is a thought-provoking book by Matthew Gordon that explores the powerful role of media in shaping public opinion and influencing political outcomes. The book examines the ways in which news organizations have become tools for those in power to control the narrative and manipulate public perception. Gordon argues that the news media has been co-opted by political and corporate interests, resulting in a distorted representation of reality that serves their agenda. He provides examples of how news stories are often framed in a way that reinforces existing power structures and perpetuates inequalities. The book also delves into the history of media and its evolution over time, from the advent of newspapers to the rise of social media. Gordon provides a critical analysis of the impact of technology on the news industry and its implications for democracy. Overall, ""News Is A Weapon"" is a timely and important book that challenges readers to question the information they consume and the motives behind it. It offers insights into the complex relationship between media and power and encourages readers to think critically about the role of journalism in a democratic society. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Sociolinguistics: Method and Interpretation presents a thorough and practical description of current sociolinguistic methodology while recognizing that methodological decisions can never be separated from questions of theory. Presents a thorough and practical description of current sociolinguistic methodology. Considers a range of issues including speaker selection, data collection, social considerations, phonological and syntactical variation, style-shifting and code-switching. Recognizes that methodological decisions can never be separated from questions of theory. Stresses the need for the entire research process from the initial design of the project to the interpretation of results to be grounded in theoretically defensible positions. Shows how the research paradigm established by a few influential pioneers has been fruitfully expanded by exciting new trends.
