Maurice Sendak

Pierre, along with the other three classic Nutshell Library titles (Alligators All Around, Chicken Soup with Rice, and One Was Johnny), is the first board book edition of Maurice Sendak's original work You loved Nutshell Library as a miniature collection, and these large board books make it even easier for children to share with their grown-up readers. For over fifty years, children have cared about Pierre, Maurice Sendak's story about a little boy who doesn't care about anything. And they will continue to care about this classic cautionary tale in this durable board book format.

A story with a moral air about Pierre, who learned to care.

Maurice Sendak brings to the picture book page two favorite Mother Goose rhymes. His beautiful paintings have the aliveness and immediacy of a child's own imaginings. The many admirers of Where the Wild Things Are and The Nutshell Library will recognize in Hector Protector and the seafarer of As I Went Over the Water the same pugnaciousness, love of mischief, and derring-do that characterize Max and Pierre. And they will agree that the beloved Maurice Sendak created a picture book of astounding originality." For collectors and budding readers alike," proclaimed Publishers Weekly.

Higglety pigglety pop The dog has eaten the mop The pig's in a hurryThe cat's in a flurryHigglety pigglety pop From these lines of a Mother Goose nursery rhyme, Maurice Sendak has elaborated a modern fairy tale of multiple themes. Its comic surface is the tale of Jennie the Sealyham terrier, who packs her black leather bag with the gold buckles and goes out into the world to look for something more than everything. The World Mother Goose Theater is preparing a new production, and they are looking for a leading lady--but experience is needed. The masterful pen and ink drawings transform Jennie's story in a manner that is typically Sendakian. Higglety Pigglety Pop Or There Must Be More to Life can be compared, in its complexity, humor, and depth of feeling, only with Sendak's own Where the Wild Things Are. HarperCollins is proud to present this new edition of Higglety Pigglety Pop that has been printed in close collaboration with the Maurice Sendak Foundation to ensure that Maurice Sendak's original pen and ink artwork has been reproduced to the highest standards.
