This volume examines the pivotal role of movement, visibility, and experience within Pompeian houses as a major factor determining house form; the use of space; and the manner, meaning, and modalities of domestic daily life, through the application of GIS-based analysis. Through close consideration of ancient literature, detailed explanations of methodology, and exploration of results, Michael Anderson provides new perspectives on Pompeian domestic space including room types and household activities that rarely feature in the discussion of ancient housing. Readers gain a better understanding of priorities in the design of Pompeian houses, the degree to which daily life was interrupted by earthquake damage in the site’s final years, and evolving motivations behind wall painting decoration. The volume not only explores how Pompeian houses reflected the needs of everyday life as imagined by their architects, but also how these spaces served to influence and control daily activities and ultimately how they were transformed by the spatial and visual requirements of domestic life. Space, Movement, and Visibility in Pompeian Houses is suitable for students and scholars of Pompeian houses and domestic life, Roman architecture and urbanism, and spatial analysis and space syntax.
Working away from trends in government policy, this book takes a future-oriented re-imagining of schools with a focus on four innate human capacities: collaboration, critical reflection, communication and creativity. Miranda Jefferson and Michael Anderson draw together examples of practice from around the world to provide a reimagining of education. They show how our schools can be sustainably transformed to be places of support, challenge and joy in learning, responsive to students’ needs and the needs in our workplaces and wider society. Readers are empowered to use knowledge and experience to create the reality they would like to see in their school, building engaged, innovative and active learning, pedagogy curriculum and leadership. Key ideas are summarised at the end of each chapter along with an extensive referencing and bibliography, and a supporting glossary.

Digital video and film technologies are transforming classrooms across the world. Teaching the Screen looks beyond the buttons and knobs to explore ways of teaching video and film effectively in secondary classrooms. More and more young people have access to low-cost filming and editing technologies - mobile phones, computers, portable digital - which is changing the experience of digital storytelling. Approaches to classroom teaching and learning need to change too. The authors offer a new pedagogy of film storytelling that draws on research from effective classroom film learning practice. They contextualise screen learning within different educational settings, discuss how teachers can highlight aesthetics in film appreciation and filmmaking, and explore the impact of different technologies. Teaching the Screen is essential reading for educators who want to create engaging learning and teaching activities with screen technologies in secondary English and other subject areas.'A well balanced and comprehensive account of the issues in filmmaking likely to be encountered by English teachers. It lifts engagement beyond the usual procedural knowledge level, to one of active critique.' - Sue Brindley, University of Cambridge'This book has bridged the theoretical and practical without compromising either. It offers a thorough systematic account of theoretical issues and practical techniques in teaching film appreciation and filmmaking.' - Associate Professor George Belliveau, University of British Columbia
It is true that some people are very damaged. It is not true that they are all unsalvageable. The Lifer and the Lawyer raises questions about childhood trauma, religion, race, the purpose of punishment, and a criminal justice system that requires harmless old men to die in prison. It is a true story about Michael Anderson, an aging African American man who grew up poor and abused on Chicago's south side and became a violent and predatory criminal. Anderson has now spent the last forty-three years in prison as a result of a 1978 crime spree that took place in southeastern Washington. The book describes his spiritual and moral transformation in prison and challenges society's assumption that he was an irredeemable monster. It also tells the story of the author's evolving relationship with Anderson that began in 1979 when Critchlow, a young white lawyer from a privileged background, was appointed to defend Anderson on twenty-two violent felony charges. For Anderson, this is a story about overcoming childhood trauma and learning how to empathize and love through faith and self-knowledge. For Critchlow, the story also raises questions about how we become who we are--about race, culture, and opportunity. Finally, the book is a revealing commentary on our criminal justice system's obsession with life sentences.

Blessed Contradictions invites the reader to think in new ways about how to understand Scripture. The Bible is written by many authors who often have differing points of view. Instead of seeing these differences as inconsistencies or weaknesses, Blessed Contradictions considers them strengths--ways to see God, theology, ethics, and theodicy from alternative angles. Each of the eight chapters will compare one biblical author to another, show their contradictions, and celebrate the blessings of such diversity.

Drama and Digital Arts Cultures is a critical guide to the new forms of playful exploration, co-creativity, and improvised performance made possible by digital networked media. Drawing on examples from games, education, online media, technology-enabled performance and the creative industries, the book uses the elements of applied drama to frame our understanding of digital cultures. Exploring the connected real-world and virtual spaces where young people are making and sharing digital content, it draws attention to the fundamental applied drama conventions that infuse and activate this networked culture. Challenging descriptions of drama and digital technology as binary opposites, the book maps common principles and practice grounded in role, embodiment, performance, play, and identity that are being amplified and enhanced by the affordances of online media. Drama and Digital Arts Cultures draws together extensive original research including interviews with game designers, media producers, educators, artists and makers at the heart of these new digital cultures. Young people discuss their own creative practices and products, providing insight into a complex and evolving world being transformed by digital technologies. A practical guide to the field, it contains case studies and examples of the intersections of drama conventions and networked cultures drawn from the US, Canada, UK, Netherlands, Singapore and Australia. Written for scholars, educators, students and 'makers' everywhere, Drama and Digital Arts Cultures provides a clear understanding of how young people are blending creativity and learning with the powerful and empowering conventions of drama to create new forms of multimodal and transmedia storytelling.

The world is left ravaged by a black liquid known as Darkwater. The survivors huddle in mysterious golden barriers known as Hellgates. Their lives had been spared from the horrors of the Abyss that lurked outside. Nightmarish monsters, twisted land, and blackened skies were just the start. There were those that awoke with supernatural powers. They were worshiped as gods, even as they raped, murdered, and toyed with people. Now, the inhuman power of these Sleepers and the savagery of the S. A. S. spread fear and misery. Life inside the Hellgates is no easier as our eight main characters learn while trying to survive this new hell. As they struggle, the demons of their past haunt their future as the darkness consumes the light. What will kill them first, the hunger, the monsters, the man with crimson eyes, or... the Devil Inside?

Scotland's Populations is a coherent and comprehensive description and analysis of the most recent 170 years of Scottish population history. With its coverage of both national and local themes, set in the context of changes in Scottish economy and society, this study is an essential and definitive source for anyone teaching or writing on modern Scottish history, sociology, or geography. Michael Anderson explores subjects such as population growth and decline, rural settlement and depopulation, and migration and emigration. It sets current and recent population changes in their long-term context, exploring how the legacies of past demographic change have combined with a history of weak industrial investment, employment insecurity, deprivation, and poor living conditions to produce the population profiles and changes of Scotland today. While focussing on Scottish data, Anderson engages in a rigorous treatment of comparisons of Scotland with its neighbours in the British Isles and elsewhere in Europe, which ensures that this is more than a one-country study.

His & Hers Relationship Guide: From a Male and Female Perspective takes everyday scenarios and breaks them down to show just how much our life's experiences and beliefs influence what we perceive to be reality... This is important because in order to know how to solve relationship issues, we must first understand the root of these issues, and in many cases miscommunication and misinterpretation is the driving force. We often see things through distorted lenses, influenced by our own personal experiences and beliefs. Men and women are, in fact, more alike than different. But because they interpret things differently, you would think that they were worlds apart. Men are not from Mars and Women are not from Venus... Our hope for everyone reading this guide is that after seeing common scenarios being deciphered from both sides, male and female, you will realize how easily things can be misinterpreted and how extremely important communication is to a relationship. We alsohope that the solutions, tips and ideas offered in this guide prove to be helpful as well. Although we can'tcover every relationship problem specifically, we hope that your interest falls under one of the 12 umbrellasoutlined in this guide and that you are able to find shelter from the storm.
