The author, Michael Brooke Fisher, wrote this book decades ago after reading a novel by the popular legal thriller writer John Grisham. With no disrespect to Grisham, he felt he could write something equally as good and took on the self-imposed challenge. Using his experience as both a criminal defense attorney and later as the Prosecutor of one of New Jersey's twenty-one counties he wrote To Kill or Not to Kill. A Los Angeles agency showed interest in acquiring screenplay rights to the unpublished novel but ultimately, that did not come to pass. At the same time the author was appointed to a State Superior Court Judgeship, making the publication of the novel with its subject matter less than appropriate. So he put it in a desk drawer and put it out of his mind. Since then he has left the bench, the novel has been published and he now welcomes people to read To Kill or Not to Kill.
Verifiable Autonomous Systems

Verifiable Autonomous Systems

Louise A. Dennis; Michael Fisher

Cambridge University Press

sidottu
How can we provide guarantees of behaviours for autonomous systems such as driverless cars? This tutorial text, for professionals, researchers and graduate students, explains how autonomous systems, from intelligent robots to driverless cars, can be programmed in ways that make them amenable to formal verification. The authors review specific definitions, applications and the unique future potential of autonomous systems, along with their impact on safer decisions and ethical behaviour. Topics discussed include the use of rational cognitive agent programming from the Beliefs-Desires-Intentions paradigm to control autonomous systems and the role model-checking in verifying the properties of this decision-making component. Several case studies concerning both the verification of autonomous systems and extensions to the framework beyond the model-checking of agent decision-makers are included, along with complete tutorials for the use of the freely-available verifiable cognitive agent toolkit Gwendolen, written in Java.

A Short History of the Mughal Empire

A Short History of the Mughal Empire

Michael Fisher

Bloomsbury Academic

The Mughal Empire dominated India politically, culturally, socially, economically and environmentally, from its foundation by Babur, a Central Asian adventurer, in 1526 to the final trial and exile of the last emperor Bahadur Shah Zafar at the hands of the British in 1858. Throughout the empire's three centuries of rise, preeminence and decline, it remained a dynamic and complex entity within and against which diverse peoples and interests conflicted. The empire's significance continues to be controversial among scholars and politicians with fresh and exciting new insights, theories and interpretations being put forward in recent years. This book engages students and general readers with a clear, lively and informed narrative of the core political events, the struggles and interactions of key individuals, groups and cultures, and of the contending historiographical arguments surrounding the Mughal Empire.

The End Has Finally Arrived... We all knew it was coming...an Apocalypse to end all things. But how exactly will the world end? Will it be slow or fast? Will it be a zombie plague? A nuclear holocaust? Death from above? Or perhaps something less predictable, like a shocking discovery in an ancient tomb or an unnamed evil stalking us in the shadows? We asked several talented horror writers to deliver their best Dystopian fiction and Apocalyptic stories, and we were horrified by what they predicted. So open up these pages at your own peril, for the End is nigh, and you may discover it is more terrifying than you could have ever imagined

These stories are a compendium of writings from the last couple of decades that have holiday-related themes. I left them largely untouched as they are reflections of not only the time in which they were written, but also represent somewhat of a timeline of events, albeit out of order, across the Christmas celebrations in my life. This is my favorite time of the year-even more so now that I have children of my own to share the festivities with. The holidays have always been magical, and even at my age now, they still are. I'm thrilled to be able to share some of these memories with you in this extended Christmas card. I hope that they remind you of your own holiday celebrations. Merry Christmas, everybody.

Designing and implementing daily lesson plans can be among the most frustrating and time-consuming aspects of teaching—a tedious exercise that places artificial restrictions on student creativity and engagement with learning. In this game-changing book, author and instructional coach Michael Fisher shows teachers how they can free themselves from rigid and ineffective busywork by replacing lesson plans with learning journeys that are guided by the students' abilities, interests, and skill levels rather than by pre-selected checklists of day-to-day benchmarks. Loaded with tips, strategies, and detailed real-life examples, Ditch the Daily Lesson Plan is the perfect guide to crafting student-centered learning experiences at all levels and across the content areas.

More than a decade into the 21st century, teachers continue to struggle with designing digital assignments as a viable tool for learning and with assessing the demonstration of that learning through student-created products. Digital tools continue to be used primarily for consumption of available resources rather than in the creation of something new. This publication explores what types of assignments are worth engaging online, how teachers and students can leverage global interactions to improve their work, and how teachers can assess digital projects and other work. Along the way, Fisher offers practical advice on rigor and relevance, digital citizenship, formative assessment, and digital portfolios. With instructional strategies and examples of real student work across the content areas, Digital Learning Strategies will allow readers to develop an understanding of the what, when, why, and how of digital assignments and assessments.

All teachers know that a robust vocabulary gives students the communication skills they need to do well on tests and shine in the classroom—and the best way to ensure successful vocabulary instruction is to embrace new and engaging strategies that don't take too much time away from other work. To get the clock on their side and do what's best for their students, teachers need to learn how to provide short and effective vocabulary mini-lessons that can be used at any point during class. Marilee Sprenger's Vocab Rehab model offers teachers easy-to-implement 10-minute instructional strategies that can help time-strapped teachers ensure that their students have a sound grasp of both general and content-specific words across grade levels and subject areas.
