This report analyzes costs and savings of joint aircraft acquisition programs, whether historical joint aircraft programs have saved Life Cycle Cost (LCC) over single-service programs, whether the Joint Strike Fighter is on track to achieving the originally anticipated LCC savings, and the implications of joint fighter programs for the industrial base and for operational and strategic risk.

These appendixes explain the methodology used in an analysis of the costs and savings of joint aircraft acquisition programs. They illustrate calculations for theoretical maximum joint aircraft savings in acquisition and in operations and support, historical joint aircraft cost-growth premiums, savings needed to offset premiums, and two cost-comparison methodologies.
Assessing the Cost-effectiveness of Modernizing the KC-10 to Meet Global Air Traffic Management Mandates
Without modernization, the U. S. Air Force's KC-10 air refueling fleet will not be in compliance with upcoming air traffic mandates regulating the minimum communication, navigation, and surveillance capabilities of aircraft flying in certain regions and altitudes. A detailed analysis of the cost-effectiveness of KC-10 modernization showed that, overall, the required upgrades would result in net cost avoidance over the life of the fleet.

Since the publication of the bestselling second edition of The Global Positioning System and GIS, the use of GPS as an input for GIS has evolved from a supporting analysis tool to become an essential part of real-time management tools in wide-ranging fields. Continued technological advances and decreased costs have altered the GPS vendor landscape significantly and opened the door to an array of receiver and software options. Retaining the in-depth description that made the previous edition so popular, The Global Positioning System and ArcGIS, Third Edition has expanded its coverage to review the capabilities and features common to most receivers. While it emphasizes Trimble and Magellan hardware and Trimble TerraSync and ESRI ArcPad software to capture data, the text’s broadened coverage makes it useful with virtually any hardware/software packages, so readers will be able to collect GPS data and install it in ArcGIS—regardless of the data capture mechanism. Covering the latest developments in this emerging field, the third edition has been updated to include: New information on automated data collectionUpdates to the conversion of GPS data into GIS form with ArcGIS Desktop (v. 9.3) as well as ESRI softwareAn examination of differential correction and improvements in accuracy of collected data Additional emphasis on ArcMap and Pathfinder OfficeIllustrations using ArcMap to combine GPS data with other data sets including raster DRGs, DOQs, DEMs, and various vector data sets Using a top-down approach, each chapter begins with a theoretical overview followed by self-study exercises and projects that provide step-by-step guidance on applying the concepts using GPS hardware or a PC. The text includes downloadable resources with GPS data sets for exercises in Trimble SSF and ESRI shapefile formats, plus other valuable learning resources. This book re-evaluates a figure whom the author considers to be the greatest composer of the twentieth century. Kennedy deals fully with Strauss's life as leading composer and national figure in the Third Reich, during which he was both fêted and cold-shouldered by the authorities. In putting this period into perspective he draws heavily on hitherto ignored material, including Strauss's own letters and diaries. In addition he reveals much about Strauss's long, happy but tempestuous marriage to the soprano Pauline de Ahna as well as tracing the important relationships to his librettists Hugo von Hofmannsthal, Stefan Zweig, Joseph Gregor and Clemens Krauss. Kennedy reassesses the man and the music, revealing a picture of a level-headed, practical and extremely versatile musician - a great conductor as well as a great composer.

Building a Multinational Global Navigation Satellite System

The U. S. Global Positioning System (GPS), now the world's preeminent pointing, navigation, and tracking (PNT) system, will in the not too distant future be joined by the European Union's Galileo, a PNT system planned to be similar to GPS in function and performance. Will the two systems cooperate, providing users with the benefits of both, or will they compete? The authors assess the economic impact of competition and how the United States can address that competition, especially as it affects U. S. economic interests.

The Life of Elgar

The Life of Elgar

Michael Kennedy

Cambridge University Press
2004
sidottu
This important biography of Elgar draws on letters and documents which became available in the preceding twenty-five years. Michael Kennedy, a leading scholar of British music and a distinguished musical biographer, uses this material, which includes Elgar's own vast correspondence, in an attempt to get to the centre of the composer's complex personality. Elgar's letters reveal his unpredictable swings of mood, from gaiety and a fondness for puns to morose self-pity and a feeling that he was 'not wanted', and although much of Elgar's music sounds confident and coherent, it also has an underlying layer of unease, melancholy and insecurity. His relationships with his wife and other women friends are a continuing thread in the life of a man who remained acutely conscious of his lower middle-class origins in spite of his meteoric rise to fame, honours in Edward VII's reign and friendship with the King.
