In the history of Judaism and Christianity the biblical ban against images has been a decisive factor in shaping collective identity around opposition to the veneration of images. The biblical ban inspired the iconoclastic controversy in Byzantium as well as iconoclasm during the Protestant Reformation. Even in the present, biblical texts prohibiting images may be easily misunderstood in ways that can lead to religious conflicts and even violence. At the same time, the humanities are experiencing an “iconic turn,” a marked attention to the role of images. Recognizing both the potential for misunderstanding the biblical texts and the promise of a more nuanced appreciation of the role of images in human experience, this book constructs a framework for understanding the place of images, and their prohibition, within the biblical text and Christian religious practice. In the form of a dialogue between an Old Testament scholar and a Protestant systematic theologian, the volume explores potential lines of convergence between the rationale behind rejecting visual representations of God and that behind regarding the icon of Christ as a representation of the invisible God. Consideration of Old Testament texts in their cultural context clarifies key distinctions underlying the prohibition of material representations of God, while explaining the central importance of the biblical texts for creating “mental iconography” of God. †

English summary: In the history of the Jewish and Christian religions, the biblical prohibition of images has played an important role in the delimitation against iconic cults, and it has fuelled the Byzantine iconoclasm just as much as that of the Reformation. What were the primary motivations for refusing visual representations of God? And how can this refusal be reconciled with the tradition of the image of Christ as the representation of the invisible God rendered possible through the concept of the incarnation? Which delimitations are implemented by the Old Testament formulations of the prohibition of images? What is its significance in religious philosophy, aesthetics, and systematic theology, and what is the position of contemporary theology regarding the non-representativeness of God? The approaches to this topic by an exegete and a systematician are carried by their shared conviction that, in view of the iconic turn in cultural studies and theology, an appropriate hermeneutics of the prohibition of images is as rewarding as it is needed. Die Annaherungen aus der Sicht eines Exegeten und eines Systematikers sind von der gemeinsamen Uberzeugung getragen, dass eine sachgemasse Hermeneutik des Bilderverbotes angesichts des iconic turn in Kulturwissenschaft und Theologie ebenso lohnend wie notig ist.

Im gegenwärtigen Protestantismus wird Kultur wieder zu einem zentralen Thema. Am Ende dieses Jahrhunderts melden sich damit Problemstellungen zurück, die in der radikalen Abkehr der dialektischen Theologie vom sogenannten Kulturprotestantismus, aber auch im Horizont einer kritischen Gesellschaftstheorie als erledigt galten. Die systematische Theologie leistet zu dieser neuen Diskussionslage ihren Beitrag, indem sie die paradigmatischen Entwürfe der Kulturtheologie im 20. Jahrhundert kritisch rekonstruiert. Michael Moxter zeigt gemeinsame Mängel der verschiedenen Positionen, die um das Recht einer Theologie der Kultur streiten. Paul Tillichs Symboltheorie bleibt mit einer realistischen Ontologie verflochten. Karl Barth interpretiert Kultur einseitig unter dem Gesichtspunkt einer dem Menschen gestellten Aufgabe. Beide versäumen die Entfaltung einer phänomenologischen und semiotischen Kulturtheorie, wie sie in Ernst Cassirers Philosophie der symbolischen Formen Kontur gewinnt. Michael Moxter korrigiert die Alternative 'Barth oder Tillich?' zugunsten eines 'Weder Barth noch Tillich!'. Dadurch erhält das Phänomen der Lebenswelt in ihrer Ambivalenz von vertrauter Nähe und irritierender Fremdheit einen zentralen systematisch-theologischen Stellenwert. Die Kulturbedeutung des Protestantismus entscheidet sich an seiner Kompetenz, die Lebenswelt als Zeichenwelt deuten.
